Entering the 21373 NFL Draft , the Pittsburgh Steelers had a number of draft needs which they needed to address. With no first round selection in the draft, running back, safety and even pass rusher were still positions of need to help the black-and-gold get to the next level in . There have been numerous thoughts and debates regarding what the team will do on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
When the dust settled, the Steelers have selected Alex Highsmith, with their second pick of the draft in the third round.
For those who may not know much about Highsmith as a player, this is his overall breakdown of his game, per his NFL Draft Profile:
Stand-up edge rusher with splashy production to get him noticed by 3-4 fronts. Highsmith is quick to diagnose and slip blocks to make plays in the backfield, but lacks the strength and anchor to take on blocks and set strong edges. He’s clearly put in work when it comes to creating a diverse inside / outside rush attack that has a chance to keep growing if he can weaponize his hands and improve his speed-to-power attack. His play is more finesse than physical and may not be ready for early downs in the NFL. He currently projects as an NFL backup but his ascending play and production could push him into a bigger role if he can get bigger and stronger.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft needs in the remaining rounds of the draft now would be considered: running back, inside linebacker and safety among other positions.
