Supermarkets across the country have descended into scenes of “absolute madness” as Christmas shoppers race to stock up on last-minute food and presents before the big day.

Empty shelves, bare freezer cabinets and long, winding queues of trolleys laden with festive treats are being seen with Christmas just two days away.

Some shoppers even reported seeing fights as festive tempers frayed, with one Twitter user writing: “Hit the supermarket today in Essex.

” Witnessed multiple fights and rude people with trolleys. “

Many shoppers are facing grid-lock traffic before they even step foot inside stores, before having to battle to find a car parking space.

One Tesco store was reportedly turning away shoppers because of a stampede of people,Plymouth Livereported.

Once inside, people are having to carefully navigate their way through crowds as they try and snap up dinner essentials, from turkey to pigs in blankets.

Some claim to have been left in “tears” as tensions run high, with several cheekily queuing with an empty trolley so not to lose their place while their pals run and get the food.

One Asda customer joked their store inBirminghamwas like “a war zone” as people tried to nab the last Yorkshire puddings, with two women making a beeline for the last packet in one of the freezer cabinets.

The unsuccessful of the two said to a giggling young child: “Don’t laugh. It’s not funny. I told you to hurry up. “

Another shopper also described” people basically ramming each other around the store to get what they want. “
