The Oscars had a little montage to drive home how important music can be to a movie. And then it ended with …. “Lose Yourself” from “8 Mile.” Why? Who knows. But then Eminem himself came out to perform the song, and Hollywood’s elite loved it.
Eminem did not bother to show up when he won an Oscar for “Lose Yourself ”back in . Apparently he was napping at the time . Paradoxically, Mr. Mathers is much more alert now despite being several years older.

) Laura Dern wins best supporting actress for “Marriage Story.” This is Dern’s first Oscar win and third nomination – she was previously nominated for “Wild” in and “Rambling Rose” in . Dern has dominated this award season, picking up supporting actress trophies at major award shows including the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Dern grew emotional onstage as she thanked her parents Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, whom she called “acting legends.”
“Some say never meet your heroes,” she said. “If you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents.” (In the audience, Ladd was understandably in tears.) Dern also thanked director Noah Baumbach for sharing his “vision” and “magic,” and also gave a shout -out to her “majestic” co-stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Alan Alda and Ray Liotta. Oh, and she turns 66 Tomorrow: “Thank you all for this gift, this is the best birthday present ever,” she said.

This is the first Oscar win and nomination for director Carol Dysinger and producer Elena Andreicheva.
Dysinger gave an impassioned speech in which she subtly called out the academy over the lack of nominations this year for female filmmakers. Director “Frank Capra handed me a Student Academy Award in , and I thought I’d skipped the hard part, ”she said. “I thought I’d then go on to make movies. And if I hadn’t had that encouragement at my back then I wouldn’t have been able to withstand the last four decades in this business. ”
She thanked many people involved with the production of her film, before saying, “I’ve been working in Afghanistan since 2018, and this movie is my love letter to the brave girls of that country. ”
She also thanked Skateistan, the nonprofit organization that teaches young girls empowerment via the sport of skateboarding. “They teach girls the courage to raise your hand, to say, ‘I’m here. I have something to say, and I’m’m gonna take that ramp. Don’t try to stop me. ”

This is the first Oscar and second nomination for Steven Bognar; first win and fourth nomination for Julia Reichert; and the first win and nomination for Jeff Reichert. The Netflix-distributed film is the first produced by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s company, Higher Ground Productions.

Chrissy Metz (best known, of course, from “This Is Us”) got quite the platform for her new career as actress-singer. While that’s not surprising, given that she sings on her show, she also just signed a deal with a Nashville record label. Anyway! She performed “I’m Standing With You,” written by Diane Warren, which is from the movie “Breakthrough.”
Side note: this is Warren’s th Oscar nomination and she has never won, despite the fact that she wrote iconic power ballads such as Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing” and LeAnn Rimes’s “How Do I Live.” We know, it’s an outrage.

) Idina Menzel sings the big ballad from “Frozen 2” It hasn ‘ t reached the level of “Let It Go” from the first “Frozen,” but “Into the Unknown” is the signature song from “Frozen 2.” Singer Idina Menzel (presenter Josh Gad noted that he pronounced her name correctly, unlike SOME people ) belted it out and was joined by many other singers onstage, who sang various lyrics of the ballad in Japanese, Polish, Thai, Castilian, German, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish and Danish.

“We have a firm belief that representation matters deeply, especially in cartoons,” producer Karen Rupert Toliver said.
“‘ Hair Love ’was done because we wanted to see more representation in animation and we wanted to normalize black hair,” Cherry said. He also advocated for federal passage of the Crown Act, a California law that prohibits discrimination based on hair style or texture.
Cherry also dedicated the award to Bryant. “May we all have a second act as great as his was.”

“Listen, I’m a bit gobsmacked,” Pitt said, noting that the win made him nostalgic. He thanked “all the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. To stand here now… ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ ain’t that the truth. This is for my kids, who color everything I do. I adore you. ”

Just like last year, the Oscars has no host but called upon some comedians to kick off the show with jokes. This time, past hosts Steve Martin and Chris Rock came out and poked light fun at the Academy and those in the room.
“We’ve had a great time not hosting tonight,” they said at the end of the set. Here are some of their jokes:
“Wow Janelle Monáe, incredible. That was incredible, ”Rock said. “While we were backstage, Steve says to me,‘ J. Lo is killing it two weeks in a row! ’”
“I’m a little conflicted,” Rock said. “I was driving here tonight and seeing there’s a terrible homelessness problem -” then Martin cut him off. “So many stars!”
“Mahershala [Ali] has two Oscars,” Rock said. “You know what that means when the cops pull him over? Nothing! ”
“ Jeff Bezos is here, ”said Rock. “Wow, great actor!” Said Martin.
“He’s got so much cash, when he writes a check, the bank bounces,” Rock said. “Jeff Bezos is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw ‘Marriage Story’ and thought it was a comedy. ”(Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post).
“I thought there was something missing this year” from the best director category, said Martin. “Vaginas?” Asked Rock.
“Ford v. Ferrari’s is nominated. I got a Ford and Ferrari and it ain’t even close. That’s like Halle Berry versus gum disease, ”said Rock.
“ Cynthia Erivo did such a good job in ‘Harriet’ hiding black people, the academy got her to hide all the black nominees, ”said Rock.
“Think how much the Oscars have changed in the past 544 years, ”Martin said. “Back in 2003, there were no black acting nominees. ”

Janelle Monai kicks off the ceremony with a riff on ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’
The show began with the pop star singing the theme song to the iconic show before diving into one of her classic songs, “Come Alive,” with the lyrics rewritten to be about the awards ceremony. She was soon joined by Billy Porter on the mic and backup dancers dressed like characters from “Midsommar,” “Us” and “Dolemite is My Name,” and other nominated films. Soon enough, Monae walked around the audience, asking various celebs to sing with her. She also proudly announced that she’s a “black queer female” and wished the audience a happy black history month.
