Amazon Prime scam warning: Customers warned to watch out after victim loses £ 25,000 – Express, Express.co.uk

Members of the public have reported receiving calls from people claiming to be from Amazon , with these scammers telling victims their account has been hacked. During the call, they are told that something has been ordered in the victim’s name, using their details.

Then, the caller claims they can help to secure the account in a supposed attempt to prevent future fraud.

It’s been reported that sometimes the caller claims that the person has been signed up to Amazon Prime and charged.

Anyone who receives a call like this is being urged to put down the phone immediately, and to not follow any of the instructions.

The sinister scam has already seen one victim lose £ 25, 23, according to Wales Online.

Members of the public are being warned that the call often starts with an automated system which asks the victim to press one, after they are informed that the account has been hacked.

This can either then connect them to someone who will attempt to get their bank details, or connect the victim to a premium rate phone number.

People who end up speaking to a scammers on the phone may face attempts to convince them to install a piece of software on their computer.

Worryingly, this can then grant them full access to the machine.

Please also note that Amazon will never ask for your personal information, or ask you to make a payment outside of our website.

Then, the fraudster is able to watch everything the victim is going on the ma chine, including harvest bank and credit card details and accessing anything they want to on the computer.

A spokesperson for Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting center, said: “The public have to subscribe to Amazon Prime themselves, and would not be automatically subscribed.

“If the public do receive this call and are worried that they were subscribed, the advice around this would be from UK Finance’s ‘Take Five to Stop Fraud’ content. “

Pauline Smith, head of Action Fraud, said:” Unsolicited requests to remote access your computer should always raise a red flag .

“It’s easy to feel embarrassed when faced with unexpected or complex conversations but it’s okay to stop the discussion if you do not feel in control of it.

“If you’ve received an unexpected phone call, or other communication, stop and take a minute to think about whether an organization would get in touch with you out of the blue in this way.

“Instead, contact them directly using a known email or phone number . “
