    • Aston Villa substitute Wesley grabs a fifth in stoppage-time
    • ASTON VILLA 5-0 LIVERPOOL |WESLEY

182:Sky Sports are now saying that Jonathan Kodjia has been awarded the first goal of the evening. He’s adjudged to have got the faintest of touches on Conor Hourihane’s free-kick. Two minutes added time.

Great **** connection from Tony Gallacher, who lines one up and rifles it straight at Orjan Nyland. The goalkeeper parries it out but Clarkson is unable to convert from the rebound.

(*********************************************************************************************:He’s such a clever player. Harvey Elliott, certainly does not play like a – year-old. He’s capable of seeing the bigger picture and executing. He plays a wonderful looping reverse pass to Clarkson, who shoots into the side-netting.

(**********************************************************************************************: Neil Critchley finally makes the change with Ki-Jana Hoever replaced by 18 – year-old James Norris. That’s a debut for the teenager.

************************************************************************************: “Top of the league, you’re having a laugh,” sing the Aston Villa fans.

****************************************************************************************: Ouch!We got a serious case of cramp going on at Villa Park this evening as Neil Taylor helps Ki-Jana Hoever stretch his legs. Nice chap. Dean Smith uses the pause in play to make a change Kortney Hause replaces James Chester.

Leighton Clarkson on for the impressive Isaac Christie-Davies. Hoever is off the field with irreparable cramp – but Neil Critchley has yet to find his replacement.

(************************************************************************************************:Wesley straight into the action and should have an assist to his name. He breaks the offside trap and his first touch sends him wide. He cuts it back into the middle where neither Trezeguet or Jota can connect.

(*************************************************************************************************: Wesley on for Jonathan Kodjia. Not the merciful change I was expecting from Dean Smith.

(*************************************************************************************************:Again Trezeguet breaks free down the left, again he can’t apply the finish. The winger cuts inside before firing low at Caoimhin Kelleher. Liverpool respond with a chance of their own as James Chester gifts the ball straight to Isaac Christie-Davies, who leathers it wide.

************************************************************************************ Can’t imagine it’ll be too long before Harvey Elliott breaks into the Liverpool match day squad regularly. His vision, technique and attitude are all top-notch. He dinks a ball into Herbie Kane, who heads it straight at Orjan Nyland.

Maybe a few Championship clubs will ask for the teenager next month.

******************************************************************************************:Aston Villa vs Liverpool LIVE: Carabao Cup quarter-final score, news and updatesFirst change of the evening for visitors sees 17 – year-old Jack Bearne replace Luis Longstaff.

67: Close!Too much subtlety from Trezeguet. He collects a fantastic ball over the top from James Chester before cooly prodding it through the onrushing Caoimhin Kelleher. He beats the goalkeeper but there’s not enough pace on the ball and Sepp van den Berg clears off the line.

67:We’re at a walking pace now with Aston Villa less than minutes away from a semi-final clash that’ll met like be against Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton or Leicester.

(************************************************************************************** (We haveminutes left on this rather strange and slightly disappointing evening in the Carabao Cup. Good experience for the youth of Liverpool but not much on offer for anyone else watching.

57:“As a massive Aston Villa fan watching all this going on from a business trip in France and taking updates from my son watching the game back at home, I really hope Villa push on and give Liverpool what they deserve for their lack of respect and arrogance at a major english competition – a good hiding ! ”Chris says on Twitter. Not a happy bunny with Liverpool’s antics.

(**************************************************************************************************: Danger!Herbie Kane brings down Jota JUST outside the penalty area and Aston Villa have a free-kick within shooting range. Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane are standing over it … Hourihane tries to replicate his first-half opener but there’s too much on it and Caoimhin Kelleher gathers.

(********************************************************************************************************:Very, very little is happening folks. In fact, nothing has happened but Liverpool are keeping the ball well. They look less erratic and rambunctious. More measured.

**********************************************************************************************:It’s nearly midnight in Doha now. D’ya think Jurgen Klopp will have stayed up to watch the second half? I reckon he’s turned in, listening to the calming sounds of ocean waves crashing along the shore. No? Just me then.

      ASTON VILLA 4-0 LIVERPOOL

(************************************************************************************************************: And we’re back underway folks. I have hear that Jonathan Kodjia is claiming he got a touch to Conor Hourihane’s opener – but we still can’t decide. That would be his hat-trick in the bag.

      Twitter reaction

James: Liverpool have effectively thrown a match here. Basically they’ve utterly devalued the Carabao Cup beyond recovery.

Andy: Shame on the EFL devaluing their own tournament by not allowing Liverpool to reschedule their quarter final tie. Shows how little they value their own competition and btw. I don’t support Liverpool.

Marvin: With the exception of Harvey Elliot, I don’t see many of these Liverpool youngsters making it in the first team.

Kolo: Klopp doesn’t need Lonergan, Jones and Neco Williams in Doha. These kids lack experience and leadership. Someone to organize and calm them down. It’s dog vs lion.

      ASTON VILLA 4-0 LIVERPOOL

HT: Tough one for Liverpool’s teenagers but Aston Villa have been thoroughly clinical and professional. Pretty weird watch if I’m honest with you.

      ASTON VILLA 4-0 LIVERPOOL |KODJIA

50: GOAL! Dean Smith’s Aston Villa have their fourth against Liverpool and it’s Jonathan Kodjia with his second of the evening.

Jota finds Ahmed Elmohamady on the right, he whips in a dangerous low cross and Kodjia is across his center-back to finish with ease at the front post.

(*****************************************************************************************************************: Youthful exuberance from Isaac Christie-Davies, who goes in late on Conor Hourihane. Referee Lee Mason goes to his pocket and shows the yellow.

39:Old Kodjia sinks young Reds. I’ll see myself out…

      ASTON VILLA 3-0 LIVERPOOL |KODJIA

(****************************************************************************************************************: GOAL! It’s three for Aston Villa as Liverpool’s youngsters struggle to deal with their opponents’ experience

Jota is swarmed by Liverpool players but still manages to prod the ball through to Jonathan Kodjia, who races clear and guides the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher to score his 50 th goal in English football.

Isaac Christie-Davies looks nice and composed in the midfield areas. He’s spreading it nicely and seems a confident chap. His latest pass finds Ki-Jana Hoever, who sweeps a cross over everybody.

(********************************************************************************************************************:What have we learned about these sides after 30 minutes? Well Aston Villa still look short on confidence and Harvey Elliott has been the best player on the pitch. Real talent.

:Harvey Elliott runs into the box, has two defenders in his way but just about scoops the ball over them both to find Isaac Christie-Davies breaking in behind. His volley is on target and Orjan Nyland has to save strongly.

(**********************************************************************************************************************:Henri Lansbury sweeps a ball forward to Jonathan Kodjia, who broke free behind the Liverpool defense. Caoimhin Kelleher anticipates it and hoofs it in to touch.

(*************************************************************************************************************************:Aston Villa vs Liverpool LIVE: Carabao Cup quarter-final score, news and updatesWell Liverpool’s youngsters don’t look too deterred by the opening. ASTON VILLA 2-0 LIVERPOOL |BOYES

(************************************************************************************************************************: GOAL! How cruel. Aston Villa double their lead and place one foot in the Carabao Cup semi finals.

A Painfully unlucky one for Liverpool defender Morgan Boyes, who deflects Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross up and over goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Cancel that round of Piña colada’s, Jurgen.

    • ASTON VILLA 1-0 LIVERPOOL |HOURIHANE

(****************************************************************************************************************************: GOAL! Bit of a sucker-punch from Aston Villa as Conor Hourihane opens the scoring.

The midfielder grabs his fourth goal of the Carabao Cup campaign with a free-kick that alludes everyone and nestles in at the far post. Jonathan Kodjia’s presence put Caoimhin Kelleher off.

(******************************************************************************************************************************: Good grief! Jurgen Klopp will be bouncing off the walls somewhere in Qatar right now. That looked a certain goal! Liverpool slice the Aston Villa defense open, Herbie Kane should score but his shot is saved by Orjan Nyland and Harvey Elliott puts the rebound into the side-netting.

(****************************************************************************************************************:“I’m not entirely sure what Herbie Kane’s stronger foot is,” says a confused Alan Smith on the commentary. This is a learning assignment for all of us. Anyway, the Liverpool forward skews a left-footer high into the stands.

Save! Lovely approach play from the visitors. Harvey Elliott is offered way too much space by the experienced Neil Taylor and the teenager obliges with a fizzed effort that Orjan Nyland parries away.

(8:I’ll end up Looking stupid but based on the opening eight minutes – Liverpool should not be priced at 8/1 to qualify. It just feels like Aston Villa are constricted and worried about looking silly if they lose tonight.

5 :Luis Longstaff, no relation to the Newcastle pair, collects a beautiful flicked pass from Harvey Elliott before volleying wide. Offside flag was up, making this update all rather meaningless. Sorry for wasting your time.

      3:

Fair play to the Liverpool and Aston Villa fans in attendance tonight. Villa Park is packed on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening. On the pitch, Jurgen Klopp’s youngsters have started brightly and are playing with great freedom.

    • Not an unbelievable achievement

That’s the assessment from ex-Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend, who isn’t really a fan of the Club World Cup.

“You can’t tell me that winning the Club World Cup means more than this trophy. On the face of it is it really that much of an achievement to go out there and win? ”He told the BBC.

“ Real Madrid beat Al-Ain last year , the team based in UAE, football in that part of the world is second division standard if that. So I don’t see it as being an unbelievable achievement, it’s just a lovely label to wrap around your brand. ”

Surprised Andy did not get the call to present the Club World Cup…

      The opponents

Should Liverpool overcome Monterrey on Wednesday night, they will play Brazilian outfit Flamengo in the final.

Flamengo went one behind to Asian champions Al-Hilal, but three second-half goals were enough to see them through as 3-1 winners. Bruno Henrique provided two assists and a goal – no wonder he’s been linked with a few European clubs.

        Twitter reaction

Chris: I don’t get why Liverpool had to play such a young team. Surely some of the first team squad could have played tonight, flew out tomorrow, and be fine for the final?

Pete: Villa fan here and feel quite perplexed about tonight’s fixture . Great if we win but people will say “it was only against kids” and if we lose will be slated because “it was only against kids” !!

Paul: Dean Smith has bottled it, he’s picked a reserve side just in case the unthinkable happens and they lose to Liverpool’s kids, it won’t happen but he’s taken the easy way out. I am expecting our kids to put up a fight but can’t see anything but a Villa win, even with a weakened team.

      Klopp backs shock

Jurgen Klopp is hoping his rising young Liverpool stars are bursting with excitement and run for their lives as the Reds bid to cause a Carabao Cup shock.

“I know how a lot of People in the public see it, “Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

” But if all the football games would be decided before we start, only because of the perception of the People, then most of the games wouldn’t be played. I believe, I’m a big believer in everybody has a chan ce.

“From the boys’ point of view, if I would be in their boots I would be excited like hell, looking forward to it like hell, run for my life, all that stuff. “

Dean Smith has been rather cautious in his program notes. Not often you can back Liverpool to beat Aston Villa at / 2 with Betfair.

“We know that it’s going to be a changed side from the one we faced here in November, but I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone connected with Liverpool Football Club who is with us this evening, “Smith writes.

” They’ve set the tone for everyone in the Premier League this season and even though the squad has been split between this tie and the Club World Cup in Qatar, we’re under no illusions that they are going to be a real threat regardless of who plays this evening – they proved that against Arsenal earlier on in this competition. “

Ross: Gutted not to make the bench against Aston Villa tonight after my last performance. Good luck to the lads though, I’ll run the line!

Leanne: A great night for Liverpool’s Academy regardless of outcome. Total of six debutants in the starting XI, two – year-old’s on the bench and a chance for everyone to express themselves without the weight of expectation.

Unlucky, Ross. Take your boot anyway. Who knows …

      Team news – Aston Villa

      . )

Is this a gamble from Dean Smith? He’s made changes from their Premier League defeat at Sheffield United with Henri Lansbury the sole player to retain his place.

      Starting XI

Wow, I know most of these players. What a relief. Dean Smith makes plenty of changes from the side who lost to Sheffield United. John McGinn, Jack Grealish and Wesley among the substitutes should things go pear shaped.

Aston Villa XI: Nyland, Elmohamady, Chester, Konsa, Taylor, Lansbury, Luiz, Hourihane , Jota, Kodjia, Trezeguet.

Subs: Kalinic, Guilbert, Hause, McGinn, Grealish, El Ghazi, Wesley.

      Stats

All of these are courtesy of Neil Jones on Twitter. He’s a legend and I’m completely in his debt.

Two 16 – year-olds start for Liverpool tonight. Harvey Elliott and Tom Hill in the front three, with Luis Longstaff (23). James Norris and Layton Stewart, both (****************************************************************************************************************************, among the subs.

Most senior appearances by anyone in that Liverpool squad is (***********************************************************************************************************, by Herbie Kane. 50 of them were for Doncaster last season. Most Liverpool appearances, seven by Pedro Chirivella.

Between the 20 -man squad, three top-flight appearances – Elliott two and Chirivella one.

      Team news – Liverpool

OK, this It is a very, very rough analysis on the Liverpool starting XI.

There are five players making their first ever senior appearances for the Reds. Those are Tony Gallacher, Isaac Christie-Davies, Luis Longstaff, Morgan Boyes and Thomas Hill.

The average age of the squad is (**************************************************************************************************************************. 6, which is thoroughly depressing so I’ll move on swiftly. Pedro Chirivella is Liverpool captain.

Formation? Haven ‘T got a clue I’m afraid. 4-3-3 perhaps.

    • Starting XI…

Liverpool have announced their side 16 early minutes – a nightmare scenarios for humble bloggers such as myself. Full analysis once I’ve Googled who the hell these players are …

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Hoever, Van Den Berg, Boyes, Gallacher, Chirivella, Kane, Christie- Davies, Elliott, Hill, Longstaff.

Subs: Winterbottom, Clayton, Norris, Clarkson, Dixon-Bonner, Bearne, Stewart.

      Where to watch…

Jurgen Klopp will gather with his players in their Doha team hotel – to watch Liverpool in action back in England in the Carabao Cup.

The bizarre situation has come about because the European champions are in Qatar ahead of Wednesday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Mexico’s Monterrey.

The runaway Premier League leaders will watch the first game of the Club World Cup last four at the Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium, between Brazilian’s Flamengo and Asian champions Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia before rushing back to their hotel.

“It’s good. Tomorrow night we start with watching the other semi-final live in the stadium, I think it should be possible. And then we will leave there a bit earlier and sit here in front of the television and watch that game, “said Klopp.” It will be absolutely exciting. I’m really delighted for the boys. “

      Evening…

Hello folks and welcome to ourLIVEcoverage of the Carabao Cup.

Excited about seeing Liverpool’s C Team take on Aston Villa’s B Team at Villa Park? Good. Me neither, but I’m contractually obliged to be here.

As you know, Jurgen Klopp has played a young side in the Carabao Cup so far and those youngsters will have to do the business again this week as the more senior players are all away in Qatar for the Club World Cup.

The German tactician won’t be in the dugout either as the Reds’ Under – s boss Neil Critchley takes charge of tonight’s clash.

It might be one to forget, but who knows – could be fun. Possibly. Maybe. Perhaps… well what else are you going to watch on a Tuesday night? Gregg Wallace’s Magical Christmas Market is on Channel 5…

      ASTON VILLA vs LIVERPOOL

Aston Villa will check on the fitness of Conor Hourihane ahead of their Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Liverpool.

The midfielder missed the Premier League defeat at Sheffield United but Villa boss Dean Smith was optimistic he would be available on Tuesday night.

Facing a much-changed Reds team, Smith may feel he can afford to make changes of his own. With Jed Steer (Achilles) out injured, Orjan Nyland could start in goal while the likes of Ezri Konsa, Neil Taylor, Douglas Luiz, Trezeguet, Jonathan Kodjia and Jota might also get some game time.

Striker Rhian Brewster is Liverpool’s major doubt for the clash at Villa Park.

With the bulk of the first-team squad on Club World Cup duty in Qatar, Under – s head coach Neil Critchley will take charge of a young squad.

Brewster, who has played in Liverpool’s two Carabao Cup ties this season, scoring a penalty in the shoot-out win over Arsenal in the last round, sustained an ankle injury in training, and will be assessed ahead of the game to determine if he will lead the Reds’ front line.
