At least seven people are dead in West Texas after a man stopped by state troopers for failing to signal a left turn opened fire and fled, injuring over 20 people as he drove before being killed by officers outside a movie theater, authorities said.Police weren’t sure of the exact weapon used by the shooter, who they said was a white male in his mid – 30 s.Midland Mayor Jerry Morales said a Texas Department of Public Safety officer pulled over a vehicle on an interstate highway Saturday afternoon. “That’s when he shot the officer and then took off and started shooting randomly,” Morales said.Dustin Fawcett was sitting in his truck at a Starbucks in Odessa when he heard at least six gunshots ring out less than 50 yards behind him. That’s when he thought, “Oh man, this is a shooting.” The suspect was driving one vehicle and at one point ditched that vehicle, taking over a United States Postal Service mail truck, Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said. Gerke said three law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting. Earlier, Midland police said the department believed there were two shooters in separate vehicles. But police couldn’t confirm reports of a second individual in the attack.Medical Center Health System President and CEO Russell Tippin said 13 patients were transported to Medical Center Hospital of Odessa. He had earlier said 14 patients came to the hospital.One of the people was believed to be a patient “caught in the action” and “not related” to the shootings, Tippin said. Seven people were in critical condition, two in serious condition and two were treated and released, he said. One patient was a child under the age of 2 who was transferred to another hospital. Greg Abbott and his wife said they are heartbroken over this “senseless and cowardly act,” describing it as a “heinous attack” and adding they will not allow the state to be overrun by hatred and violence.Vice President Mike Pence said following the shooting that President Donald Trump and his administration “remain absolutely determined” to work with leaders in both parties in Congress to take such steps “so we can address and confront this scourge of mass atrocities in our country.” Pence said Trump had spoken to the attorney general and that the Midland FBI office is assisting in the investigation, along with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Dallas.The shooting comes just weeks after a gunman in the Texas border city of El Paso killed 22 people when he opened fire at a Walmart.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
