Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after he tried to stab an officer in the stomach in Clapham, south London.
The officers were called to a disturbance after 9pm on Tuesday .
The suspect tried to leave the scene and, when a female officer tried to stop him, he attempted to stab her in the stomach with two knives.
Despite the attack, Scotland Yard said she was able to draw her Taser and discharge it before pursing the suspect alongside her colleagues.
The 35 – year -old man was arrested at nearby Clapham Common on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon and a public order offence.
Police say the suspect remains in custody at a south London police station, as work continues to locate the knives, which are thought to have been discarded somewhere between Lynette Avenue and the scene of the arrest.
The officer who was attacked did not require hospital treatment, but police said the incident “could have easily had devastating consequences”.
Chief Superintendent Simon Messinger, of the central south command unit, said he had “no doubt” that the man intended to “seriously harm one of our colleagues”.
He said the female officer completed her shift after the attack and will “be back helping keep the streets of south London safe once again today”.
The attack, he added, “demonstrates how effective, and unfortunately necessary, a police officer’s protective equipment is as this has potentially saved her life “.
