BOMB squad cops have carried out a controlled explosion after a ‘suspicious device’ was found at a polling station this morning.
Emergency crews raced to Glen Tower flats in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, after the alarm was raised at around 1am.
The building – set to be used as a polling station just hours later – was cordoned off before the explosion was carried out.
Police said the explosion was carried out as a precaution and the device was later found to be ‘non-viable’.
A – year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident.
Voters have now asked to head to nearby Knowetop Prinary School instead.
Chief Inspector Mark Leonard said: “Officers responded to reports of a suspicious device on the ground floor of Glen Tower flats, Motherwell around 1am on Thursday, 12 December, (******************************************************.
“A cordon was placed around the building and residents within the cordon were evacuated for safety reasons.
“Police liaised with Explosive Ordnance Device staff to examine the item and a controlled explosion was carried out as a precaution.

“The evacuation of residents within the cordon has now ended and police are working with North Lanarkshire Council to return people to their homes.
