Bonfire Night: Riot police tackle disorder in Leeds – BBC News, BBC News

Police in riot gear tackled Bonfire Night disorder in Leeds involving groups of young people throwing fireworks and setting bins alight.

A helicopter was also deployed to deal with the mayhem that broke out after 20: 20 GMT in Harehills Road.

West Yorkshire Police said people were hurling fireworks and missiles and police vehicles were damaged.

A number of people were arrested. Police said investigations were ongoing to identify all those involved.

In Greater Manchester, firefighters responding to an out-of-control bonfire in Hyde wereattacked by a gang of 40 young peoplethrowing fireworks.

One Leeds resident, who did not want to be named, said bricks were thrown at shop windows and police cars in Harehills Road.

“They were all coming up the road, they had rockets in their hands and police were backing off,” he said .

He added his door was open and young children “were coming in here to get away from it”.

“A lot of people are saying how bad it was,” he said.

A number of roads were closed while officers contained the groups.

There were no reports of any injuries, West Yorkshire Police said.

Ch Supt Damien Miller said: “We made it clear from the outset that any instances of disorder or antisocial behavior would not be tolerated and we were able to quickly respond.”
