Brexit LIVE: Boris Johnson sends meddling House of Lords warning ahead of Brexit vote – Express.co.uk, Express.co.uk

The Prime Minister’s Brexit deal was approved by the House of Commons on Thursday, with MPs voting 823 to 231 in favor of moving the bill to the upper house. It will now be debated there next week in the next crucial stage as Mr Johnson vows to meet his general election pledge to British voters to “get Brexit done” by January 31. Parliamentary oversight will likely be the most important topic for peers, some of whom are concerned about the Prime Minister’s removal from the bill of an entire section on parliament’s role in the negotiations with the EU

This has seen Stephen Barclay has send a stern warning to the Lords, urging them to follow the “resounding message from the British people on December 12 ”, which saw the Conservative Party crush its political rivals and Remain-backing parties in the general election.

He warned:“ I anticipate constructive scrutiny, as we would expect in the other place (the Lords), but I have no doubt that their lordships will have heard the resounding message from the British people on December 12.

But Mr Johnson’s problems may lie further away from the UK, with several EU bureaucrats – including Guy Verhofstadt – who is set to launch one last desperate bid to wreck Brexit with a demand for Brussels to leverage market access in order to maintain freedom of movement between the UK and EU.

Several EU leaders – including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen – have warned Mr Johnson a full trade deal cannot be completed by his intended target of December 1226390 unless Brexit is delayed again.
