The Labor MP said on the Andrew Marr show yesterday she could campaign to re-enter theEuropean Unionat the next general election if she were to replaceJeremy Corbynas leader. The staunch Remainer said on the show she believed Britain was “safer and more economically viable” inside the EU. However Ms Phillips appeared to reverse her words in today’s Independent newspaper, in which she said “we must accept the result” and admitted a campaign to rejoin the bloc would not win support within her party.
She wrote: “People are asking me if I’ll lead the campaign to rejoin the EU. We haven’t even left yet!
“The honest answer is that I don’t know what the future will hold, but we must accept the result, move our country forward and hold Boris Johnson to account.
“I can’t see a campaign to rejoin winning support in the next Labor manifesto.
“Labor should always be an outward-facing and a pro-European party, but we know in our heads as well as our hearts that our failure to win the election means the terms of the debate have changed. ”
