He said the virus will spread slowly at first and then will grow “really quite fast” as cases skyrocket and the UK announced its fifth death from the deadly bug today.

PM Boris Johnson today warned that Britain is unable to stop the spread of the disease – and said the country’s battle plan will be beefed up within days.

But he won’t yet take drastic action such as banning public events and footie matches – as it’s too early to be effective.

This afternoon the PM confirmed that Britain was rapidly moving towards trying to “delay” the virus until the summer to try and stave it off.

At a press conference at No 20 Boris told the nation: “Our scientists think containment is extremely unlikely to work on its own.

“That is why are making extensive preparations for a move to the delay phase.

“The more we can delay the peak of the virus to summer, the better the NHS will be able to manage.”

In a rally cry. , he urged Brits to “look out for one another, pull together in a united and national effort”, but said he had “no doubt we can and we will rise to this challenge.”

Boris will lay out more plans in the next few days after another COBRA meeting on Wednesday as he admitted he is no longer shaking hands with people due to the risk of catching it.

Pubs and churches are unlikely to be told to shut as it’s something ministers ” can’t do and shouldn’t do”, chief adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said.

It comes as:

A fifth person in the UK has died due to the disease

  • UK stock markers and bonds tumbled this morning in the biggest fall since
  • Ministers discussed holding footie matches behind closed doors earlier today
  • Shoppers are already panic-buying essentials amid fears they may run out – forcing shops to ration supplies
  • The elderly will be told not to
  • leave their homes if coronavirus gets out of control

  • Passengers arriving back in the UK from quarantined areas of Italy are still not being checked
  • Ministers are mulling when to start social distancing measures including banning events , closing schools and encouraging Brits to work from home.

But they are unlikely to take such drastic steps yet – for fear of Brits getting fatigue over crackdown measures which may not work.

Britain is said to be just days from formally going from the “contain” to the “delay” phase as coronavirus spreads across the country.

The PM confirmed he was watching what was going on around the world, and refused to rule out any measures needed to defeat it.

What should I do to stop the spread of coronavirus?

    NOW

(Self-isolate for) days if you return from an affected country where the area is on lock-down

  • Stay at home if you have flu-like symptoms after coming back from any affected country
  • Wash your hands for at least seconds more frequently than usual

(FUTURE) WITHIN NEXT TEN DAYS )

Stay at home for seven days if you have a mild fever or cough

  • FOOD WILL BE ON THE TABLE

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the Commons earlier: “Acting too early creates its own risks.

“We will make the right choices of what to do at the right moment.

“We will do what is right to keep people safe.”

He insisted that “food supply will continue, even in our worst case scenario” – and stressed that Parliament should stay open too.

More guidance for employees, businesses and social care workers are on the way this week, he added.

A Government source said earlier: “If you look at the countries which went quite quickly, you have seen fatigue already and people saying they don’t want to do it anymore.”

The World Health Organization’s Dr David Nabarro said on BBC Radio 4 this morning: “It is not just the big events. I want to stress it is also gatherings in community halls, in religious spaces and services, and also in pubs and the like.

“It will be that sort of gathering that the Government will look at, as well as of course the big events.”

Today Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden played down the chances of banning events today, and said it was “very premature” to be talking about it.

There are “no plans” to follow in the footsteps of France or other countries at the moment, he insisted.

He told BBC Breakfast: “We shouldn’t be cancelling events at this stage, but I just say as a caution that we do keep these things under review and that may change in the future but we certainly have no plans at this stage to take any such steps. “

Writing in The Sun today, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Jenny Harries said: “It is now likely the virus is going to spread so we are stepping up planning to delay the peak of the outbreak to reduce the number of patients coming into the NHS during our busy winter period.

“We may in the future recommend certain measures, such as working from home or asking more vulnerable people to stay at home.”

This morning the EU Council announced visitors will be banned from entering buildings to try and stop the spread.

The number of people coming to meetings will be slashed and working groups will be cut doiwn too.

Mayor of London candidate and former Tory leadership candidate Rory Stewart today called on the Government to shut schools and ban mass gatherings now.

He said last night: “You must act as quickly as you can in a way that you’re not going to have any regrets … there will be so many voices around the table who are going to be pushing to say let’s just give it another day or two.

“My experience watching people deal with Ebola in the eastern Democratic Congo and indeed with other situations is you have to act early.”

He said he was keeping a keep eye on China, which has imposed draconian measures across its entire country, but it appears to be curbing the spread of the disease.

“My sense is aggressive containment and taking short-term economic damage is definitely worth doing if you can stave off the bigger spread,” he added.

Former Chancellor George Osborne urged ministers to use Wednesday’s budget to “vaccinate the economy” against the deadly bug.

Rishi Sunak is set to reveal his economic plans in just a few days time, but the spread of the virus threatens to overshadow it completely.

The Foreign Office have advised against “all but essential travel” to the worst-hit regions.

But the travel advice still says that Brits will be given permission to fly home.

The Foreign Office say they do “advise” two-weeks of self-isolation upon returning from an affected region.

But there is nothing stopping passengers from hopping on public transport or entering densely populated spaces.
