A Captain who was removed from the US Navy after saying it was not doing enough to help his crew fight coronavirus was filmed making a touching final departure from his ship.

Capt Brett Crozier had previously spoken about the need for more measures to be put in place by the Navy to prevent troops dying outside of wartime.

However, US Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said Capt Crozier “exercised extremely poor judgement” and he was removed from his post.

On his final disembarkment from the vessel, hundreds of the 4, (crew gathered as they clapped and cheered him off.)

He paused as he walked the gangway to wave an emotional goodbye, before once again saluting his colleagues.

Captain Crozier was commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt – where (people onboard had been infected.

He said the letter “created the impression the Navy was not responding to his questions.”

Modly added: “It created the perception the Navy is not on the job; the government is not on the job. That’s just not true.”

His letter went on to warn the Pentagon that the situation on the ship was “accelerating” as crew members were living in confined spaces.

He had called for “decisive action” in the four- page letter which was published in the San Francisco Chronicle.

It also read: “We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die.”

Uninfected members of the ship’s crew are being quarantined in Guam after the Governor of the US island territory said they could stay providing they had no interactions with locals.

A statement from the Democratic leaders of the House Armed Services Committee said: “While Captain Crozier clearly went outside the chain of command, his dismissal at this critical moment … is a destabilizing move that will likely put our service members at greater risk and jeopardise our fleet’s readiness. “

” Throwing the commanding officer overboard without a thorough investigation is not going to solve the growing crisis aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. “
