Marcus Rashford’s sensational free-kick ensured Manchester United edged into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Chelsea.

Rashford put Manchester United in front with the first shot on target in the match at Stamford Bridge.

Daniel James was felled by Marcos Alonso inside the Chelsea penalty area in the 26 th minute, which gave the visitors a chance to break the deadlock.

Rashford, who missed a spot-kick at Norwich on Sunday, made no mistake with his effort as he found the bottom left *** to put Solskjaer’s side ahead.

Chelsea level just after the hour-mark when Michy Batshuayi held off four visiting defenders to drill into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

But Rashford doubled his and United’s tally with a stunning free-kick from 30 yards which found the top corner to put the Red Devils into a 2-1 lead and they ultimately held on despite the Blues’ spirited effort.

Relive all the action as it happened …

The visiting fans will be going back home tonight happy

Final minute of normal time

Chelsea have the ball deep in United’s half but don’t do anything with the ball.

Time’s running out for the hosts.

Zouma won’t want to see that again

Zouma carries the ball forward and attempts a speculative effort from some distance.

And, well, as you guessed – it ended up very high and very wide.

He looked a bit embarrassed about that one – and it’s easy to see why.

73KEY EVENT

GOAL: Chelsea 1-2 Man United (Rashford)

OH MY!

You’ll do well to find a better free-kick all season, because that is an absolute beauty from Rashford.

It’s some way out – probably about 30 years – and the England striker eyes it up for a while, before rifling in a net-buster that flies into the top corner.

You don’t stop those.

71

Double substitution from Chelsea

Lampard rolls the dice now.

Pulisic, the hat-trick hero from the win at Burnley, is replaced by Pedro.

And Gilmour, who has been impressive tonight, is replaced by Mount.

69

Close from Fred

That double substitution seems to have lifted United a bit.

And they almost prove it, as Williams mounts n attack but Fred’s shot is wide of the goal.

67

Double sub for United

It’s becoming an all-too frequent criticism, but Lingard has just been hauled off by Solskjaer after another disappointing display.

The England midfielder failed to get a hold of this game when he was needed, and heads to the dugout having done little tonight …

He is replaced by Pereira, while LIngard is subbed off for Martial.

63

Will Chelsea kick on?

It’ll be interesting to see how United react to this now.

They’ve not really been that threatening all game, and it was only a matter of time before Chelsea hit back.

Now the hosts have that equaliser, United need to find their groove otherwise they’ll be heading back to Manchester on the back of a defeat.

61(KEY EVENT)

GOAL: Chelsea 1-1 Man United (Batshuayi)

What an absolute superb solo strike from Batshuayi to pull Chelsea back into the game.

The Belgian picked the ball up deep in his own half, carried it forward with a powerful run, but he still had plenty to do.

Rather than carry it into the box, he let fly with a stunning hit that goes into the bottom corner.

Romero had no chance, and the Blues deservedly get their equaliser.

56

Inches from Hudson-Odoi

Hudson-Odoi lets fly with a rocket of a half volley – and it narrowly goes over Romero’s goal.

That would have been some goal, the Blues winger breaching the United offside trap.

United’s defense beginning to show some gaps now; it’s up to Chelsea to take advantage.

54

It’s all Chelsea right now

The home end is bouncing right now – and the Blues fans can sense their team are knocking for a goal.

If they are to equalize, it will be no surprise if the attack comes down the right flank.

Reece James has been superb all night, delivering some dangerous balls into the box.

52

Penalty shout for Chelsea!

Let off for United as Chelsea dangerously break on the counter attack but Williams does tremendously well to intercept the ball.

However the youngster almost undoes his good work when he needlessly gives the ball away, but Jorginho’s shot is well blocked by Rojo.

The home fans were calling for a penalty but Rojo had his hands behind his back and clearly blocked with his midrift.

He’s back to his feet – and almost on the scoresheet

Hudson-Odoi has recovered from the collision a moment ago and almost gets an equaliser for the Blues.

The winger gets on the end of the ball but can’t get a good connection and it goes narrowly wide.

47

Hudson-Odoi thrown into the advertising board

Ouch! That’s a nasty one for Hudson-Odoi, who stays down after colliding into the advertising board.

TV replays show that the winger competing for the ball with Rojo and Williams, with the latter seemingly throwing him off the pitch.

Naughty that, from the United left-back.

The Blues winger is back to his feet.

46

No changes at the break

Both managers decide against making any half-time subs – and it remains the same line-ups from the first half.

Second-half: Back underway in west London

Chelsea get the action back underway – how will they fare in this second half?

United will no doubt be the happier of the two teams …

Half-time: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United

Arguably against the run of play, but United go into the break with a slender lead thanks to Marcus Rashford’s penalty.

One minute added time
