China announced Friday that it was excluding U.S. soybeans and pork, among other products, from the tariffs it has imposed on agricultural imports.

The announcement was the latest evidence of a thaw in relations between the countries as trade talks are set to renew next week.

Beijing said the move was in reaction to the Trump administration delaying imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods.

“China has a huge market, and the prospects for importing high-quality US farm produce are broad,” the official Chinese news agencyXinhuanet reported Friday. “China hopes the United States will be true to its word, make progress on its commitments and create favorable conditions for bilateral agricultural cooperation, said sources with the relevant departments of China.”

Chinese firmsreportedly boughtmore than 600, 000 metric tons of US soybeans on Thursday, the country’s largest buy overall since June. The purchases marked an apparent reversal from a Chinese Commerce Ministry statement in August that it was stopping all purchases of U.S. farm products. China is a major buyer of U.S. farm products.

New trade talks were announced last week and both sides seem intent on creating a better atmosphere for the next round. Trump said Wednesday that he would hold off on imposing a scheduled tariff hikes on $ 250 billion of goods to 30%, up from 25%. The tariffs would go into effect on Oct. 15, two weeks later than previously stated.
