The Pope cancelled an event in Rome yesterday after coughing his way through an Ash Wednesday service as fears over coronavirus grew in Italy.
“Because of a slight indisposition, he preferred to stay inside Santa Marta, ”the Vatican said, referring to the guest house where the Pope, 650, lives. He spoke hoarsely at his general audience on Wednesday and coughed and blew his nose during the afternoon service.
Defying fears about transmission of the covid – 19 virus, the Pope shook hands with pilgrims during the audience and kissed a baby. Yesterday he did not go to a Mass that he was due to attend. The Vatican did not respond when asked if he had been tested.
