When he lost the EU referendum, David Cameron telephoned Barack Obama and the European leaders to say “sorry”. He had no cause to apologize to Britain, however. Some Remainers insist that he should never have held a referendum and his words, in an interview, suggest a man burdened with guilt. “I worry about it a lot,” he says.
But, as Mr Cameron points out, Britain had been divided over Europe for a very long time and the referendum was “inevitable”. In fact, calling it is one of the best things he ever did.
