NEW DELHI: A proposal by producers of “Chhapaak”, a film starringDeepika Padukoneand based on acid survivor Laxmi Agarwal, for an awareness film for thespecially-abledcould be in a limbo after the star’s appearance at JNU in solidarity with Left students who were attacked on Sunday.

Skill development ministry’s National Skill Development Council (NSDC) on Thursday said that it had been approached with a proposal that Padukone could work in a short awareness film and that the matter was under consideration and had not been rejected so far. But how far the project will go now is not clear.

There were reports that the skill development ministry had dismissed the proposal after she visited the JNU campus. Her decision to stand with JNUSU presidentAishe Ghosh, who had been injured during the attack on Sunday evening, prompted many in the film industry and outside to praise her. A source said it was for the actor to confirm if she still wanted to work with the department.

A ministry official said the production team sought a promotion of the film’s subject.

“In lieu of the same, the actors from the movie had met some acid attack survivors and specially-abled candidates who are also Skill India beneficiaries. However, there is no formal engagement with the related party, “he added. “This proposal was never officially accepted so there is no question of rejection,” he said. “We urge Deepika Padukone to state clearly if she is willing to become part of the proposal,” the official said.
