Deleting the database and running away! An Indian IT engineer was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for deleting 180 servers of his former company

#科技资讯Delete the database and run away! An Indian IT engineer was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for deleting 180 servers of his former company, although it was just a test server and did not cause serious consequences. The engineer was dissatisfied after being fired. He also found that his account password was still valid, so he searched for the server deletion script on Google and remotely logged into the server to place the script until it was activated and started to delete. Of course, it was easy to find out that it was him who did it, so of course he was arrested. View the full text: https://ourl.co/104490

Singapore's NCS (National Computer Systems) is a large IT service company that provides outsourcing services to other companies, including software and information system development. It has branches or offices in Singapore, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Australia and India.

Such large IT service companies usually need to recruit a large number of IT engineers. Among them, 39-year-old Indian citizen Kandula Nagaraju is an employee of NCS and is responsible for the QA process. He and his team run the program on the test server before deploying it to the customer system.

In October 2022, NCS fired Kandula Nagaraju. The reason for the dismissal was said to be poor performance, which made Kandula Nagaraju very confused. He thought he was performing well in the position, so he was still stuck in the office until November 16.

Eventually, he had to return to India because there was no work in Singapore. In the following months, Kandula Nagaraju discovered that although he had no relationship with NCS, his server login credentials were still valid and he could continue to access it remotely.

The next step was to formulate a revenge plan: from January to March 2023, he searched for server deletion scripts on Google, and then used his own credentials to log into the server for testing. Unbeknownst to NCS and his former team members, he logged in more than 13 times in March 2023 alone, and successfully deployed the server deletion script.

On March 18 and 19, 2023, Kandula Nagaraju activated the deletion script and began deleting servers one by one, which would minimize suspicion, until March 20 when the NCS QA team was unable to log into the server and discovered that as many as 180 test servers had been deleted.

However, Kandula Nagaraju apparently did not consider that using his own account and password to remotely log in to the server for deletion would be easily discovered. NCS determined the cause of the failure through a simple investigation and developed a remediation plan.

NCS said that the test server itself was of low importance and did not contain any sensitive data, and that both NCS's own data and its customers' data were safe. However, NCS still spent $678,000 to remedy the situation, and this part of the cost was additional loss.

This made the investigation easier after the NCS called the police and they quickly zeroed in on Kandula Nagaraju, who was eventually found guilty of unauthorized access to computer data by the court and sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Finally, I would like to remind you that the probability of deleting the database and running away is still quite high in recent years, but you should not commit illegal acts in any case. The ending of these cases of deleting the database and running away is a prison sentence
