A disturbed young man was arrested lurking in the woods with a hunting knife and a ‘rape kit’.

Kyle Morgan, 21, was found carrying a bag containing the weapon alongside handcuffs, an eye mask, a set of limb restraints and an open-mouth gag in Storeton Woods, nearBebington, at around 9. 15 am on January 18.

And remarkably, he was caught thanks to a hunch from an off-duty police officer.

When asked why he had the sinister kit, he replied: “Because I wanted to kill someone.”

Morgan, of Aldersgate inRock Ferry, had been spotted by the off duty officer who felt he was acting suspiciously, so called his colleagues to the secluded area.

He later pleaded guilty to commit an offence with the intent of committing a sexual offence and possessing an offensive weapon.

Morgan was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order atLiverpool Crown Courtafter it emerged he was severely mentally ill, meaning he will be detained in a secure hospital.

The court heard after his arrest he was taken to Wirral Custody Suite, where he told his solicitor he had owned the knife for a long time and had bought the other items from a sex shop.

Morgan was asked why he had the items and he said, in a calm voice, “because I wanted to kill someone.”

He said he had been having these thoughts for a number of years, and that while he had no plan on that particular day, he was going to “find someone and kill them and make it up as he went along. “

His mobile phone was examined and it revealed he had been searching pornography sites for images of sex with dead people.

Liverpool Crown Court

Wendy Newton, from the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences unit of Mersey Cheshire Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: “We may never know if Kyle Morgan truly meant to carry out his declared intention of killing someone, but the items in the bag he was carrying were chilling indeed.

Merseyside Policecarried out extensive investigations to see if there was any evidence that he had carried out any of his macabre plans but nothing else came to light.

“It became clear early on that Kyle Morgan has some serious mental health issues and the court decided that the most fitting outcome of this case is that he be detained in a secure hospital unit and treated there.

“A troubled man is now being given the correct treatment and a disturbing case has been brought to a satisfactory conclusion.”

As part of his sentence, Morgan was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order that prohibits him from possessing items that are capable of restraint, such as rope or handcuffs, in a public place.

The order also states Morgan must not stalk, harass or intimidate women, and imposes a series of restrictions on his use of the internet.
