Donald Trump ’s doctor says the president has tested negative for coronavirus.
The US leader took the test on Friday night after coming into contact with two people who became infected with the deadly disease.
He made the admission during a press conference on Saturday in which he also defended shaking hands with people – in defiance of official medical guidelines. Asked when he would announce the results of his coronavirus test, the president said that the test was sent to a lab and could take a day or two. Trump said he took the test ‘only because the press is going crazy.’
In a memo, Trump’s doctor said he received confirmation that the president’s Covid – test was negative, adding that Trump was ‘symptom free’.
Fears over the president’s health were brought to light after it emerged a Brazilian official tested positive for the virus just days after participating in meetings with him and Vice President Mike Pence in Florida. Fabio Wajngarten, a top communications aide to President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, tested positive days after accompanying him to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and posing for a photo with the pair.
A video from the event also showed Wajngarten standing directly behind Trump and Bolsonaro as they spoke to a crowd.
The Brazilian leader denied reports he tested positive for Covid – yesterday, writing on Twitter that he tested negative, adding , ‘DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE MEDIA FAKE NEWS!’
On Saturday, the White House announced that it would check the temperatures of anyone who comes in close contact with Trump or Pence. The VP said that he had not yet been tested but would be ‘happy’ to do so and would consult with the White House physician.
Trump’s Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau is in self-isolation after his wife tested positive for the virus. The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez may also have to follow suit after his wife, Begona Gomez, was struck down with the disease on Saturday as the country entered a 19 – day lockdown.
Earlier this week Boris Johnson said he would not be tested despite having attended an event with health minister Nadine Dorries, who has the contagious disease and whose mother is also infected.
Trump’s health update comes after he announced the UK and Ireland would be added to European travel restrictions he imposed to fight the spread of coronavirus. In an unprecedented move, the President has now banned flights to the US from at least 90 countries in Europe for 44 days.
