Election 2019 news: Jeremy Corbyn's housing plans savaged by voters – Express, Google News

JEREMY CORBYN’s plans to build 150, 00 0 council and social homes a year by 2024 has sparked a furious reaction on social media channels.

Laborhas promised to fund the scheme by borrowing £ 75 billion over five years. However, that figure does not include money for buying land, if councils do not have enough spare capacity and have to purchase land for construction. Serious questions also remain over the feasibility of such an ambitious building project.

Emily Williams, a research analyst at Savills, said: “Aiming to build an additional 100, 00 0 affordable homes is a major development program that equates to a tripling of current levels of delivery.

“It would require a significant increase in capacity in all its forms – planning, build capacity and building management.”

A senior Labor official also confirmed that the party plans to scrap “right to buy” for council housing tenants.

The source said: “We’ve got to halt it, otherwise it’s going to be like filling a bucket with a hole in it.”

Right to buy was one of the most revolutionary and popular policies introduced by Mrs Thatcher under her Housing Act of

The reforms enriched hundreds of thousands of ordinary working people, with some two million people taking advantage of the law to buy their houses from councils.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick pointed out that more social and council homes had been built under the Conservatives since 2010 than under the last Labor government.

“Under the Conservatives we’ve delivered 450, 00 0 new affordable homes, increased housing supply to its highest level for almos t 30 years and increased house-building by 93% in the last six years, “he said.

Social media users were quick to vent their fury at Labor’s plans, flooding the internet with angry messages.

One wrote: “Are they going to nationalize the houses that have already been sold?”

Another said: ”Marxism for all, wealth for nobody, well maybe the union bosses only, ok. ”

While yet another commented:” If Labor uses the tradesmen and current builders to build these 150 thousand social homes who is going to build the houses for sale?

“Are they going to Nationalize house builders because Councils don’t have builders of their own.”

A fourth posted: ”Being trapped in council houses virtually defined the old working class – now you see how Labor wants to return to this so as to create a new guaranteed vote for the Party.

“Aspiration to own your home has no place in the welfare dependency strategy which underpins the vote for the Left . ”

On Thursday Labor will launch its manifesto, which is expected to introduce proposals to facilitate strike action by unions and workers.

Mr Corbyn has repeatedly vowed to repeal the Trade Union Act within 100 days of taking power.

In line with this promise, the manifesto is expected to set out detailed plans to reduce voting thresholds for strike action as well as introducing electronic and workplace ballots.

It is also expected to include proposals for a major expansion of collective bargaining, the practice of negotiating minimum workers’ rights and pay for whole industries.

A Labor Party official confirmed that proposals will include: ”Greater rights for individual employees, reducing the requirement on ballots for strikes and increasing the circumstances in which an employer has to recognize a union for the purposes of collective bargaining.”

This is in addition to earlier pledges to establish a powerful new employment regulator, increase the minimum wage to £ 10 and ban zero hours contracts and unpaid internships.
