In fairness Damian Bobby Charlton did score against the likes of Italy, Portugal, Argentina , Yugoslavia, Spain and the Soviet Union.

Made a pretty handy contribution back in 1966 as well didn’t he?

Stuart:Can’t remember him and his mates putting loads past the likes of Malta, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg etc.Harry Kane can’t choose the opposition.Damian:Not many of Kane’s goals have come against “traditional powerhouses”? Bobby Charlton scored 3 of his 49 goals against countries that have won the World Cup. So has Kane.

  3. Ronaldo closes in on century

    Portugal 6- 0 Lithuania

Cristiano Ronaldo knows where the onion bag is doesn’t he …

The 34 – year-old forward took his tally to 98 international goals with a hat-trick against Lithuania as Portugal moved within one win of a place at Euro 2020.

The Juventus man could become only the second man to reach 100 international goals if he scores twice against Luxembourg on Sunday.

Ronaldo’s ninth Portugal hat-trick – with seven of those coming since his 30 th birthday – takes him to within 11 goals of Iran legend Ali Daei’s world-record 109 .

Given I’ve talked about England goalscorers this morning it’d be a tad remiss not to mention this Fella.

Yep that man Cristiano Ronaldo was on the mark again last night scoring a hat-trick as Portugal strolled to victory against Lithuania.

  5. (Blueprint for success at ‘home’ tournament?

    Gareth Southgate

England secured their place at Euro 2020 with a comprehensive win over Montenegro but Gareth Southgate’s side must now focus on finishing their group, which concludes in Kosovo on Sunday, with a record that ensures they are seeded next summer. (Euro) is not an official ‘home’ tournament for England – but with group games at Wembley and the semi-finals and finals also held at the stadium, it is the nearest equivalent since the Euro ’96.

But must England do in the coming months to end their long wait to win a tournament?

Have a read of what our chief football writer Phil McNultyhas to say about thathere.

  6. Inspirational stuff

It seems Marcus Rashford has a new admirer. If he carries on scoring goals in the same way as he added his ninth goal for England, he’ll get a few more as well.

    This is just heartwarming stuff.

  7. ‘No England player should be booed like that ”

Gareth Southgate doesn’t look very happy about it all does he …?

And the England boss made his feelings known on that after the game, “I am hugely disappointed for Joe,” he said.

“Joe had done nothing wrong and no England player should be booed like that when they are wearing the shirt.

“All the players are particularly disappointed with that.”

  8. ‘Joe hasn’t done anything wrong’

    Here’s Raheem Sterling’s tweet …

Honestly could not believe what I was seeing or hearing last night.

  9. Gomez booed

    England 7-0 Montenegro

It wasn’t exactly all sweetness and light last night from an England perspective.

Joe Gomez’sintroduction inthe 70 th minute was met by boos from some fans, something his team-mate Raheem Sterling condemned shortly after.

Manchester City’sSterling was dropped for the gameafter he clashed with Liverpool defender Gomez on Monday. Sterling was seen applauding Gomez when he came on to the sound of jeers.

“It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault,”Sterling tweeted.

“Joe hasn’t done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and works hard, especially after a difficult week for him, to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong. “

  10. England’s leading scorers

In case you’re wondering Harry Kane’s three hat-tricks for England have come against Panama, Bulgaria and Montenegro.

Possibly just a tournament and qualifying campaign away from joining this list.

Or could he do it earlier?

    Harry Kane

After his hat-trick Harry Kane is in pretty exalted company these days in England’s list of leading scorers, with only five players above him.

And w hen he scored his second of the evening, it meant that only Nat Lofthouse (32) and Jimmy Greaves (33) had reached the 30 -goal mark quicker for the Three Lions.

So just where do you place him among England’s best ever goalscorers? Not many of his goals have come against nations up near the top of the world rankings or against countries who have traditionally been regarded as powers? But does that matter?

Let me know your thoughts in the usual way.
