A man has been jailed for life for the “evil” rape and murder of an up-and-coming Australian comedian.

Jaymes Todd stalked Eurydice Dixon for more than two-and-a-half miles before attacking her in a park in central Melbourne in June last year.

The 22 – year-old woman had been walking home after performing a late-night gig in the city.

At a court in Victoria on Monday, Judge Stephen Kaye sentenced Todd, 20, to life in jail with a minimum term of 35 years and called the killer’s crimes “totally and categorically evil”.

He also said Todd’s chances of rehabilitation were extremely low and he would pose a major threat to the community if he was released.

The judge added that the defendant’s autism was not a contributing factor to the murder.

Todd had previously pleaded guilty to rape and murder charges.

Speaking outside court, Ms Dixon’s father said he was happy his daughter’s killer was off the streets, and hopes that Todd becomes a better person.

Jeremy Dixon said: “What I wish for Jaymes Todd, and I believe Eurydice would wish, is that he gets better and realises what he’s done.

“I extend my sympathy, my sincere sympathy for those who love him. It’s a terrible tragedy all around.

“Eurydice herself should be remembered as her friends will remember her – for her wit, her courage and her kindness, not for her death. ”
