An Italian champion powerboat driver and two of his crew have been killed in Venice while trying to break a powerboat speed record.
Fabio Buzzi, 76, a ten-time world powerboat champion, was attempting to beat his own record for sailing the 1, 300 miles from Monaco to Venice when he apparently misjudged his entry between two causeways which straddle the entrance into the lagoon.
Traveling at 70 knots, or just over 80 mph, Mr Buzzi smashed his 20 – meter boat into one of the causeways, sending his vessel flying.
“The boat took off and flew 30 meters through the air, landing on its stern on the other side of the causeway where the victims died on impact, ”an official at Venice’s port authority said.
