In what must be a contender for the year’s most shocking finding, scientists have identified the world’s most powerful species of electric eel.
The newly discoveredElectrophorus voltaiis capable of generating 860 volts – enough to stun an adult human.
Its discovery in the jungle highlands of northeast South America highlighted how little is known about the region’s wildlife, researchers said.
“These fish grow to be seven to eight feet long. They’re really conspicuous, ”C. David de Santana, the lead author of a study published yesterday in the journalNature Communications,said. “If you can discover a new 8ft-long fish after 250 years of exploration, can you imagine what remains to be discovered in that region?”
