Supporters of the Five Star party have voted overwhelmingly to backa coalition with the center- left Democratic Party, heading off snap elections and the prospect of a hard-right government led by Matteo Salvini.
More than 63, (Five Star supporters, 79 .3 per cent of those voting in the online poll, backed the plan after party leaders said they would pull out of the coalition if supporters voted against it. Nearly 16, 500 opposed the deal.
The result cements a deal between two parties that have long loathed each other but have united to stave off a power grab by Mr Salvini, whoended his coalition with Five Star last monthwith the aim of holding quick elections to exploit his Surging popularity.
