
The US Coast Guard is searching for four crew members of a large cargo ship which overturned off the coast of Georgia.
Twenty crew members who were on board the Golden Ray have been rescued, but the remainder are unaccounted for,
The Golden Ray, a 656 – foot vehicle carrier, began listing as it left the port of Brunswick early on Sunday morning.
Coast Guard officers were alerted by an emergency call at 2 am, By then the ship had capsized and caught fire.
“We’re not sure exactly what occurred,” Justin Irwin, commander of Coast Guard Station Brunswick,told the Brunswick News.
Hurricane Dorian did brush past the Georgia coast last week before it was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.
But it is unclear whether the weather was the reason for the ship to capsize.
Boats and helicopters have been called in to help with the search for the missing crew members.
The Golden Ray which was built in 2017 and is flagged out of the Marshall Islands, was en route to Baltimore.
Authorities have closed the Port of Brunswick while the rescue mission continues.
The port is one of the busiest in the US for shipping cars, with nearly 614 vehicles passing through the docks in the year ending June 30.
