Freddie Flintoff 'lucky' to survive 124mph Top Gear crash – The Telegraph, Google News


Freddie Flintoff, the Top Gear star, walked from a 124 mph crash where Richard Hammond almost died.

The former-England cricketer, 41, overshot a drag race strip in his three wheeler and spun off in a cloud of dust at Elvington Airfield on Tuesday.

On Wednesday night Mr Flintoff told The Sun he was “absolutely fine”. But a witness said he “was lucky to walk away”.

Flintoff, 41, was reportedly driving a specialized three-wheel vehicle that can reach high speeds when he veered off the runway.

Medics rushed over to the former England cricketer, however the sportsman had escaped unscathed.

Flintoff told the Mirror: “I’m absolutely fine and was back filming today.

“I go to great lengths to make sure I do well in Top Gear drag races but on this occasion I went a few lengths too far.

“It will look more ridiculous than dangerous when you see it on TV.”

ATop Gear spokesman said the safety of the show’s presenters is top priority.

Flintoff hosts Top Gear alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.

The trio have beenwell-received by fans of the show, which had experienced a frequently changing line-up since the departures of Hammond , Jeremy Clarkson and James May in 2015.

Hammondinfamously experienced a near-fatal accidentat the airfield near York where Flintoff was filming.

Hammond was at the wheel of a jet-powered Vampire dragster in September 2006 when it crashed while traveling at 288 mph.
