Of all the Friends behind the scenes reveals, we’d never have expected one from Philip Schofield of all people.
TheThis Morninghost revealed that during the show’s 10 – year run he saw several episodes filmed and that ‘if the audience didn’t laugh as loudly as expected, they would rewrite the whole thing ‘.
‘Everyone would huddle around a table and you’d have members of the cast, Matthew Perry, who would jump in and join the writers so you could get a better laugh.
James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, was on the show to celebrate Friends 25 th anniversary and he added: ‘We were extremely fortunate to have talented writers at the top of their game.
‘And yes if you didn’t get the right response, because writers laugh at their own jokes, but if it didn’t land they’d huddle and five minutes later have an entirely different joke that landed. ‘
James played Gunther, the manager of Central Perk in the 90 s sitcom, and he first appeared in the 1994 episode The One With The Sonogram At The End.
He went on to become the show’s most frequent guest star, showing up in 148 of its 236 episodes – and making his mark thanks to his unrequited love for Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel Green.
Although the show ended in 2004 James has continued to be a regular fixture when it comes to celebrating its various anniversaries.
He opened a Central Perk replica in London’s Carnaby Street to mark the show’s 15 th anniversary in 2009, as well as appearing at a replica Central Perk in New York during 2014 ‘s 20 th anniversary celebrations.
