Georgia releases gameday depth chart for Tennessee – 247Sports, 247sports.com

Knoxville, Tenn.– – Georgia, ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press and coaches polls entering Week 6, is set to faceTennessee (1-3, 0-1) this Saturday in Knoxville.

The Bulldogs are 36 – 10 under fourth-year head coach Kirby Smart, with a 19 – 6 record in conference play . The Volunteers are now 1-3 on the season following a 34 – 3 road loss to Florida in their conference opener. The all-time series between Georgia and Tennessee is tied up at 23 – 23 -2, with the Bulldogs winning the last two games 41 – 0 and 38 – (**************************************************************************.

Georgia is coming off a game in which it fell behind 7-0 and trailed 10 – 7 against Notre Dame before seemingly taking control of the game early in the fourth quarter. That’s when the Fighting Irish lived up to their name and mounted a comeback, forcing the UGA defense to stand tall with a fourth-down stop and securing the 23 – 17 Victory. The Bulldogs moved to 3-0 all-time against Notre Dame and record a potential resume-building win over a team that brought a ton of fire and intensity into the Classic City.

While the team returns a bunch of starters from a year ago, there are plenty of new faces. Position battles were fierce during the preseason and on Monday, the Bulldogs’ offered an updated look at the depth chart for Week 6. Georgia’s includes the use of the word “or” several times but below, we give offer a complete look.

1. Jake Fromm (Sr.)

2. Stetson Bennett (RSoph.) **********

Through four games, Fromm has completed 75. 6 percent of his passes for 788 yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Bennett is 18 – of – 23 for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, with two runs for 15 yards and a touchdown.

This comes as no surprise as Fromm is Georgia’s guy at quarterback and Bennett has been the heavy favorite to win the No. 2 job since this spring. Saturday’s game will mark Fromm’s 30 th straight start since he took over for an injury Jacob Eason against Appalachian State in 2017. Since becoming Georgia’s starter, Fromm has a record of 25 – 5 and has helped lead the team to a pair of SEC Championship game appearances, one SEC title, a Rose Bowl, a Sugar Bowl, and an appearance in the National Championship game. Bennett is a former walk-on and scout-team quarterback who was brought back as a scholarship player in January.

1. D’Andre Swift (Jr.) OR Brian Herrien (Sr.)

3. Zamir White (RFr.)

4. James Cook (Soph.)

Through three games, Swift has 49 carries for 388 yards and three touchdowns, with six catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Cook has nine carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns, with six catches for 57 yards. Herrien has 29 carries for 163 yards and three touchdowns, with three catches for 20 yards. White has 19 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns along with a five-yard reception.

As you can see, the Bulldogs go four deep at the running back position and all four should get meaningful snaps. Herrien had a fantastic preseason and it’s no surprise that he’s listed as the co-starter at running back. Swift is coming off a season where he led the Bulldogs in rushing and rushing touchdowns with 1, 049 yards and 10 touchdowns. White returned from an ACL injury suffered last preseason, his second in a span of 10 months on both knees, to see his first collegiate snaps last week. Cook was a change-of-pace running back for the Bulldogs a year ago and continues to show he is more than capable of lining up in the slot.

Z-Receiver

1. Tyler Simmons (Sr.)

2. George Pickens (Fr.)

Smart labeled Simmons as a starter earlier this fall and while he was Georgia’s leading-returning pass catcher at the wide receiver position, he did not have a catch in the season opener. Instead, Simmons had a pair of runs for 10 yards. Against Murray State, Pickens emerged as a potential go-to playmaker, catching four passes for a team-high 78 yards and a touchdown.

X-Receiver

1. Matt Landers (RSoph.) OR Lawrence Cager (Grad)

The Bulldogs have a pair of 6-foot-5 receivers at this receiver spot. Cager caught two passes for a team-leading 41 yards in Week 1. Landers had two receptions for 26 yards. Against Murray State, Landers had a 12 – yard catch.

Slot Receiver

1. Demetris Robertson (RJr.) OR Kearis Jackson (RFr.)

2. Dominick Blaylock (Fr.)

Robertson appears to be leading the way after a really strong preseason. He’s one of the fastest players on the time and gives the Bulldogs an explosive option on the inside. Blaylock saw his role increase after an injury to Kearis Jackson in Week 1. Against Murray State, Robertson had three catches for 21 yards and a touchdown, while Blaylock had three catches for 48 yards and a touchdown.

1. Charlie Woerner (Sr.)

2. Eli Wolf (Grad) OR John FitzPatrick (RFr.)

Many, including Smart, expect big things from Woerner this season. The former four-star prospect has waited his turn behind Isaac Nauta for the past two to three years and is now the Bulldogs No. 1 tight end as long as he’s healthy. He’s one of the best overall athletes on the team and could really benefit from James Coley calling the plays. He had two catches for seven yards against Vanderbilt.

Wolf came in as a graduate transfer from Tennessee and has provided much-needed depth. He had an 11 – yard catch in Week 1. He’ll share time in that No. 2 spot with 6-foot-7 Marist High School product FitzPatrick, who has put on 10 pounds since last season . Against Murray State, Wolf had four catches for 73 yards, while FitzPatrick had a 22 – yard reception.

Left Tackle

1. Andrew Thomas (Jr.)

2. D’Marcus Hayes (Sr.)

Left Guard

1. Solomon Kindley (RJr.)

2. Justin Shaffer (Jr.)

Center

1. Trey Hill (Soph.)

2. Warren Ericson (RFr.) **********

Right Guard

1. Cade Mays (Soph.) OR Ben Cleveland (RJr.)

Right Tackle

1. Isaiah Wilson (Redshirt Soph.) OR Jamaree Salyer (Soph.)

With Isaiah Wilson injured, none of this comes as a surprise as all five starters are pretty much set in stone. Salyer returning from injury and this is exactly what we expected for the Bulldogs up front.

Defensive Tackle

1. Tyler Clark (Sr.) OR Devonte Wyatt (Jr.)

2. Michail Carter (Sr.)

Nose Tackle

1. Michael Barnett (Grad.) Or Jordan Davis (Soph.)

Defensive End

1. David Marshall (Sr.) OR Malik Herring (Jr.)

3. Tramel Walthour (Soph.)

4. Travon Walker (Fr.)

Wyatt led the defensive line with three tackles in Week 1, with a solo stop and a quarterback hurry. Almost everything looks as we expected it to on the defensive line except for Marshall being listed No. 1 on the depth chart. He had been battling a foot injury since UGA played Vanderbilt a year ago and it looked this preseason like Herring would be the starter. Walthour being injured bumps impressive freshman Travon Walker into No. 3 at defensive end. **********

Against Murray State, Clark had three tackles and a tackle for loss, Barnett had three tackles, and Wyatt and Walker each had two tackles and shared a tackle for loss. Carter, Marshall, Herring, and Davis all had a tackle.

SAM Linebacker

1. Walter Grant (Jr.) OR Jermaine Johnson (Jr.)

3. Adam Anderson (Soph.)

JACK Linebacker

1. Azeez Ojulari (RFr.)

2. Nolan Smith (Fr.) OR Robert Beal (RSoph.)

MIKE Linebacker

1. Tae Crowder (RSr.)

2. Quay Walker (Soph.) **********

WILL Linebacker

1. Monty Rice (Jr.)

2. Nakobe Dean (Fr.)

Rice tied for the team lead in Week 1 with seven tackles and four solo stops. Azeez Ojulari was next with six tackles and shared a sack with Channing Tindall. Johnson being listed as Grant’s backup last week was a bit surprising but nothing else here is shocking. Grant, Ojulari, Crowder, and Rice have been getting a ton of first-team work this preseason, but they’ll all be part of a rotation. Walker and Dean are going to play a lot on the inside and all of the outside linebackers are probably going to see some significant action.

Against Murray State, Rice, Johnson, and Walker each had four tackles, with Johnson splitting a sack and having a tackle for loss. Nolan Smith had three tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Tindall had three tackles and a sack. Marshall and Dean also had three tackles, with Dean splitting a tackle for loss. Crowder, Beal, and Ojulari had two tackles. Grant and Anderson each had a sack.

(Right Safety)

1. Richard LeCounte III (Jr.)

2. Otis Reese (Soph.) Or Lewis Cine (Fr.)

Left Safety

1. J.R. Reed (Grad.)

2. Tyrique McGhee (Sr.)

3. Christopher Smith (Soph.)

LeCounte had four tackles in Week 1, while Red had three. Reed and LeCounte are returning starters from a year ago and both have a ton of experience under their belts. LeCounte led UGA in tackles last year and Reed finished second. LeCounte was pushed by Reese this spring and preseason camp while Reed has started 29 straight games at UGA over the past two seasons. Cine has been impressive since he arrived in Athens and will likely see some special teams action. McGhee could be the next man up at either spot if someone goes down.

Against Murray State, LeCounte had five tackles, Reed had four tackles, shared a tackle for loss, and recovered a fumble that he returned for a touchdown. Smith had two tackles and Cine had one tackle.

Right Cornerback

1. D.J. Daniel (Jr.) OR Tyson Campbell (Fr.)

Left Cornerback

1. Eric Stokes (RSoph.)

2. Tyrique Stevenson (Fr.)

STAR / Nickel

1. Mark Webb (Jr.) OR Divaad Wilson (RFr.)

Webb tied for the team-lead against Vanderbilt with seven tackles and four solo stops. Against Murray State, Webb had a team-high six tackles, along with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Campbell had three tackles. Poole, Wilson, and Stevenson had two tackles. Stokes had one tackle.

There are a couple of heated position battles here and it appears we don’t yet know who has won those. Daniel has been getting a lot of first-team reps of late but Campbell has had a strong camp and started 10 games a year ago. Both of them are likely to play a lot. Webb and Wilson have duked it out for the starting STAR / Nickel spot since the spring and, once again, we expect both to have a role in the defense. Both of them will be on the field when UGA goes with six defensive backs on third down.

Place -Kicker

1. Rodrigo Blankenship (Grad.)

2. Brooks Buce (RSoph.) **********

Punter

1. Jake Camarda (Soph.) **********

2. Bill Rubright (RSoph.)

Long Snapper

1. Steven Nixon (Grad.) Or Payne Walker (RFr.)

Kickoff Return

1. James Cook (Soph.) Or Brian Herrien (Sr.)

Punt Return

1. Tyler Simmons (Sr.) OR Kearis Jackson (R. Fresh.) OR Dominick Blaylock (Fresh.)

Simmons averaged 18 .3 yards on three punt returns in Week 1 while Cook averaged 20 .5 yards per kickoff return. Blankenship made all three field goals in Week 1, including a 50 – yard kick, while Camarda averaged 54 yards on two punts. Against Murray State, Herrien had four kickoff returns for 37 yards. Simmons had three punt returns for 65 yards and Blaylock had one for 11 yards. Blankenship made all nine PAT and Camarda averaged 48 yards per punt on two punts.

Smart has talked about a competition at punter this preseason but Camarda is going to be the guy here and that has been known for awhile. We still don’t yet know who’ll handle kick and punt return duties but all four of the players listed for those two spots were expected. Nixon and Walker may split the snapping duties with Nixon handling punts and Walker handling field goals.
