A shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida early this morning left two people dead and several others wounded before the gunman was killed by law enforcement officers.

A spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office told Pensacola News Journal that shots were fired on base early Friday morning.

Just before 8am, the sheriff’s office announced the shooter has been killed by deputies.

Two nearby hospitals have accepted a total of 11 patients from the base Friday

The US Navy tweeted that two additional fatalities have been confirmed as a result of the shooting.

Eight people were taken to Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, hospital spokeswoman Kathy Bowers said.

Two of the injured victims were said to be in critical condition, reportedPensacola News Journal.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said two deputies were shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, reportedWEAR.

St. John’s Catholic School, located directly outside the air station, has been placed on lockdown as a precaution.

The station posted a message on its official Facebook page earlier saying both gates at the site are ‘ currently secured. ‘

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said in a tweet his office is monitoring the situation in Pensacola and is offering full support to law enforcement.

NAS Pensacola employs more than 16, 000 military and 7, 400 civilian personnel, according to its website.

One of the Navy’s most historic and storied bases, it sprawls along the waterfront southwest of downtown Pensacola and dominates the economy of the surrounding area.

It’s home to the Blue Angels flight demonstration team, and includes the National Naval Aviation Museum, a popular regional tourist attraction.

The shooting in Pensacola comes less than 48 hours after an active duty US sailor opened fire at Pearl Harbor’s naval shipyard in Hawaii, killing two civilian workers and injuring a third, before taking his own life.
