THE family of a care worker who died after contracting coronavirus just months before she was due to retire have paid tribute to the “wonderful” mum-of-one.

Catherine Sweeney, , is believed to have caught the virus while working without Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as a home carer in the area of ​​Dumbarton, Scotland.

Catherine was rushed to hospital last Sunday, but died on Saturday night at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

She was due to retire from her care job with West Dunbartonshire Council next year and is thought to be the second carer in the UK to die after contracting the virus.

Yesterday, heartbroken relatives spoke of their grief after the death of an “amazing” mum- of-two, believed to be the first carer in England to die with coronavirus.

Carol Jamabo, , worked for Cherish Elderly Care in Bury, Greater Manchester but fell ill around a week before her death last Wednesday.

‘LIFETIME OF SERVICE’

In a statement released through the GMB Union, Catherine’s family hailed their “wonderful mother, sister, and beloved auntie” and thanked medical staff who looked after her “heroically”.

The family said: “Catherine was well known, and well respected within the community of Dumbarton, where she was born and raised.

“She was a caring and generous person, especially when it came to her time, having dedicated over twenty years of her life as a Home Carer to unfailingly serving the needs of the most vulnerable in society.

“After a lifetime of service to the community, we know she will be sorely missed, not just by her loving family, but by many others for her incredible warmth, care, and dedication.

“A whole community shares in our grief.”

The Sun revealed last week that 27 People had died in just seven days after the deadly bug “swept” through a care home in Glasgow.

Yesterday, Britain’s death toll climbed to 5, after after more people died with the deadly disease over the past 56 hours.

Positive cases have now reached 70, – up from 58, 960 the day before.

Last night, Boris Johnson was rushed to intensive care at London’s St Thomas’s Hospital as he struggled to breathe and was given oxygen treatment.

In Scotland, the number of people who have died with coronavirus is , after two more deaths were announced yesterday.

At least (medical staff on the NHS frontline have died with the disease, with a leading heart surgeon the latest to die from the killer bug.

Industry leaders and unions have demanded better protection for care workers on the frontline.

Hazel Nolan, GMB Scotland Organizer, said it had been “a sobering and tragic week for our social care sector”.

Ms Nolan said: “The lack of consistency around guidance and the lack of resources to mitigate infection at work is causing frontline workers to lose whatever confidence they had in the response.

“The advice being given is resource led, not science led.

“An untold story of this crisis so far has been the inconvenient truth that the lower paid you are on the frontline of the key worker response, the less protection and resource you get.”
