Manchester United will be without defensive trio Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones and Luke Shaw for their trip to AZ Alkmaar, as well as striker Anthony Martial and midfielder Paul Pogba.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave an updateon his injured stars afterUnited’s 1-1 drawwith Arsenal, with Wan-Bissaka out through illness for the Europa League clash. Martial could make his return at Newcastle this weekend, while Shaw – along with Eric Bailly and Tim Fosu-Mensah – has been out for some time. Jones came off injured in last week’s Carabao Cup win over Rochdale. Pogba is still struggling with an ankle problem.

Solskjaer is likely to use the Alkmaar clash as another excuse to rotate his squad, with young players James Garner, Tahith Chong and Brandon Williams included in the squad.Mason Greenwoodhasn’t yet started a league match for United this season, but is likely to start again on Thursday night .

MEN Sport’s writers pick their team to face the Dutch outfit, while you can pick your own at the bottom of this article.

Marcus Rashford plays so Mason Greenwood is rested to start at Newcastle on Sunday. Jesse Lingard’s best role is as an attacking midfielder in a midfield trident and James Garner is overdue first-team minutes.

Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams are the obvious full- backs and Marcos Rojo is marginally better at center half. Tahith Chong can be erratic but United cannot risk Daniel James when they are hanging their hat on him to produce some stardust in an impotent attack. Chong did well for the Under – 23 s at Lincoln and Angel Gomes showed promise against Astana two weeks ago.

Eight changes for United

Only three players keep their places from the Arsenal game, but they’re all players who need to establish themselves for different reasons: Axel Tuanzebe deserves the chance to nail down a spot at center-back after an impressive display (notwithstanding the mistake) on Monday night; Jesse Lingard desperately needs to get in the goals, whileAndreas Pereiracould use 90 minutes in his favorite attacking midfield role.

Sergio Romero, Diogo Dalot and Fred are fairly obvious rotation choices, especially Dalot who needs game-time, if fully fit himself, to take advantage of Wan-Bissaka resting. Greenwood should probably start to give Marcus Rashford a much-needed rest up front, though the 17 – year-old should be in Premier League Contention, too.

Brandon Williams played well against Rochdale and deserves his first United start.

Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes vie for the final place in my side, which Chong just takes as he’s more comfortable on the left.

Another Europa League game gives Solskjaer more opportunity to rotate his team and give chances to the youngsters who have impressed in recent weeks.

Romero is a given in net while Tuanzebe has to start after an impressive display, mistake aside, against Arsenal. With a lack of full backs in the traveling squad Dalot should start at right back while Marcos Rojo should start at left back. There’s been plenty of calls for Williams to be given a chance from the start but Solskjaer needs to strike the right balance of youth and experience.

In midfield Fred has to come back in and it’s another big opportunity for him to impress. Matic will likely start as McTominay needs to be rested and Pogba is out injured.

Greenwood is United’s most in form forward so should lead the line while Rashford just doesn ‘ t look fit and should start the game on the bench. Chong has struggled for confidence in his last two first team starts and despite impressing against Lincoln on Tuesday night should be given minutes off the bench instead.

Solskjaer should make a number of changes vs Alkmaar.

Liam Corless

Neither Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw nor Ashley Young have traveled to the Hague, so United have only two natural full-backs in their squad in Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams.

Axel Tuanzebe acquitted himself well at left-back in the first half against Arsenal and deserves a game back in his preferred position, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof should be rested for the trip to Newcastle.

James Garner is deserving of a chance in the first team but he played 90 minutes at Lincoln on Tuesday night and his first appearance of the campaign will likely come off the bench.

A midfield duo of Fred and Nemanja Matic is underwhelming but that is where United are at right now. Angel Gomes has missed the last two games through injury and should come back in after impressing on matchday one against Astana.

Marcus Rashford is woefully out of form and although Daniel James has made the left-wing position his own at the beginning of the season, United’s No. 10 produces his best football from that flank.

United’s goal against Arsenal came from a breakaway down the right wing involving James, and Mason Greenwood, whose movement as a central striker is superior to Rashford’s, could profit from the Welshman’s crosses.

Tyrone Marshall

Sergio Romero should start in goal for United, he is probably the best No. 2 in the league and needs minutes. Solskjaer might be reluctant to risk his first choice center backs so Tuanzebe and Rojo start, with a return for Dalot and a first start for young Brandon Williams.

We might see James Garner off the bench but it would be a surprise if he starts after playing in Lincoln on Tuesday, so Fred and Nemanja Matic anchor the midfield, with Angel Gomes asked to again provide the spark.

In attack Mason Greenwood has to get another start, while Andreas Pereira seems to be a regular on the right hand side at the moment. This is another chance for Tahith Chong to impress as well, but he needs to start taking those opportunities.
