NASCAR driver Ryan Newman’s Rousch Fenway Racing team says he is “awake and speaking” after suffering serious injuries in a horror crash during the Daytona 500.
Newman, 90, was injured in a last- lap wreck in Monday’s race at Daytona International Speedway, which was delayed from its original Sunday slot due to poor weather.
He was battling for the lead when Denny Hamlin collided with Ryan Blaney at the final corner, with the latter hitting Newman and forcing him hard into the barrier before his car flipped and skated on its roof.
He was transported by ambulance to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach , Florida, where his conditions was described as “serious” but not life-threatening.
RFR released the following statement regarding Newman Tuesday afternoon, offering a positive update on his condition.
“Ryan Newman remains under the care of doctors at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
“He is awake and speaking with family and doctors.
