EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Another day, another quarterback loss for theNew York Jets.

Trevor Siemian, who started Monday night forSam Darnold(illness), limped to the locker room in the second quarter after his left leg was bent awkwardly on a late hit by (Cleveland Browns) defensive endMyles Garrett

It was a nasty-looking injury, but Siemian managed to get up and walk off the field. The team later called it an ankle injury, and Siemian was ruled out early in the third quarter. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Siemian was replaced by third-stringerLuke Falk, who was signed off the Jets’ practice squad earlier in the day. Falk finished 20 – of – 25 passing for 199 yards as the Jets lost,23 – 3.

The Jets are in the midst of a calamitous run at quarterback. On Wednesday, they announced that Darnold had been diagnosed with mononucleosis. Coach Adam Gase said Darnold would miss multiple games, but he expressed confidence in Siemian, who compiled a 13 – 11 starting record for the (Denver Broncos) ***************************** (in 2016 and ’17.

Playing for the first time since 2017, Siemian was rusty from the outset. He completed only 3 of 6 passes for 3 yards. He also was sacked twice. On a third-and – 15 from the Jets ” 32 – yard line, he was flushed outside the pocket and heaved a deep pass to tight endRyan Griffin. Garrett arrived a split-second late – he was penalized – and landed on Siemian, who appeared to be in significant pain.

Falk, a 2018 sixth-round pick of theTennessee Titans, made his NFL debut. He spent the preseason with the Jets, but the former Washington State star was released on cutdown day and returned on their practice squad.

New York’s offense moved the ball better with Falk under center, but still did little against a Browns defense that finished the night with four sacks and one fumble recovery.

In past years, running backBilal Powellwas the Jets’ emergency quarterback, but he was not active Monday night. Gase said at halftime that running backLe’Veon Bellwas the emergency QB if Falk had to exit.

Also for the Jets, newly signed receiverDemaryius Thomaswas ruled out in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. He had one catch for minus-1 yards.
