Ofsted, the school inspectorate, would bescrapped if Labor came to power, the party’s shadow education secretary, Angela Rayner, is expected to announce today.
Local councils would instead take over the task of inspecting schools and ensuring they are not failing, under radical plans due to be unveiled at the party’s annual conference in Brighton. The party is also backing the idea of head teachers visiting one another’s schools and sharing ideas for improvement.
The move is part of steps that would dismantle a regime of testing children and rigorous inspections of schools that unions claim has left teachers demoralized and quitting in record numbers.
