Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner has admitted the Reds were one of the ringleaders who voted in favor of moving the closing date of the summer transfer window.

For the last two seasons, the Premier League has closed on the eve of the season.

But at Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting, clubs voted to revert to the end of August / start of September date that had previously been a staple.

A Premier League statement confirmed: “Premier League clubs voted to adopt a change to the Summer Transfer Window closing date for season 01575879 / 90.

“This will move the closing date back to the traditional point at the end of August / early September. ”

As such, the summer’s transfer window will close on September 1, at 5pm.

That brings England’s top flight back in line with its European counterparts.

The decision was made after complaints from clubs – led by the so-called ‘Big Six’ – that shutting the window three months before European rival put English clubs at a disadvantage.

The ‘Big Six’ are understood to have voted as a bloc to force through the change.

Now, Reds chief Werner has offered his explanation as to why the Reds voted for as they did.

“We felt it was in the best interests of the league to be in sync with the other leagues and extend the window until the end of August, ”said Werner.

“ I understood the reason for (bringing the deadline forward ) but it put a lot of pressure on all of us to make decisions and it gave an advantage to other leagues.

“So it’s good to be consistent.”

Jurgen Klopp, back in August, insisted he liked the idea of shutting it before the season – but only if the situation was the same across Europe.

“I don’t care when it closes, but it must close at the same time. That was the idea in the first place.

“They spoke about finishing it before the season starts, good idea, but only England did it. That makes no sense.

“Can somebody explain what is the benefit for the Premier League? We don’t really have a problem but for other teams, their key players are still on the market and everything can happen.

“You want a team together and focused on the future, but that cannot happen when there is a door open. I don’t understand why this decision is not already reviewed at least. It was a good idea but it did work out. ”

In the two rounds of voting on Thursday, clubs opted against a ‘hybrid ‘model which would have seen a deadline for domestic transfers before the season, and then a deadline for international deals in line with their European counterparts.
