London Bridge terror attack: Two members of the public dead – latest news – The Telegraph, Telegraph.co.uk

(B) oris Johnson last night paid tribute to the extraordinary bravery of members of the public and the emergency services who helped tackle a knife-wielding terrorist on London Bridge, describing them as “the very best of our country”.

At least two people were killed and several more seriously injured – three of whom were taken to hospital – when a terrorist wearing a fake suicide vest went on a rampage yards from the scene of 2017 ‘s London Bridge attacks.

But the suspected jihadist was wrestled to the ground and disarmed by heroic individuals, including the man pictured left, before being shot dead by specialist armed officers.

Breaking off his election campaign, the Prime Minister said Britain would never be “cowed, divided or intimidated” by those who brought terror to the streets and he vowed to hunt down and bring to justice anyone else involved.

The incident began just before 2pm, when the attacker, dressed all in black, began randomly stabbing people inside Fishmongers’ Hall, a conference and banqueting venue at the north end of London Bridge.

The venue was hosting the fifth anniversary of Learning Together, an initiative launched by two Cambridge University academics that brings together professionals from the criminal justice sector and higher education.

On Friday night a spokesman for the university said: “We are gravely concerned at reports that University of

Cambridge staff, students and alumni were caught up in the incident at London Bridge.

Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected. ”In the aftermath of the incident police ferried witnesses to the Salvation Army headquarters near St Paul’s Cathedral to gather statements.

One man entering the building told reporters: “My friend died in my arms today. I just want my friend back.”

Witnesses reported seeing police giving a man CPR in the road while another person was carried from the scene under a blanket.

Astonishing images captured on social media showed the attacker lying on the pavement outside the hall after being challenged by passers-by.

Despite wearing a clearly visible, but hoax, suicide belt, they bravely sat astride him to prevent more carnage. Moments later armed officers from the City of London Police arrived and after dragging away the members of the public, they appeared to open fire, shooting the attacker at least twice.

Mr Johnson was to chair an emergency Cobra meeting late last night. Coming just days before the country goes to the polls, yesterday’s attack bore chilling similarities to the outrage at Borough Market on June 3 2017, five days before that year general election.

Then, eight people were murdered by an Isil inspired cell of three attackers in fake suicide vests who drove across London Bridge, plowing into pedestrians and stabbing people before being shot dead by police.

Last night counter terror detectives were investigating whether yesterday was a copycat attack inspired by those events.

The murder of Labor MP Jo Cox took place in the run-up to the 2016 EU referendum vote.

Conservative and Labor suspended campaigning last night as a mark of respect to the victims but said they would review the matter over the weekend.

Mr Johnson cancelled today’s appointments to focus on the response.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said last night: “What’s remarkable is the breathtaking heroism of members of the public who literally ran towards danger not knowing what confronted them . “

At Scotland Yard, Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said: “Counter Terrorism Command are now leading this investigation. I must stress, however, that we retain an open mind as to any motive. “

He appealed for anyone with images or footage of the incident to share it on the police image appeal website. Dame Cressida Dick, the Met commissioner, said last night that police were first called at 1. 58 pm and officers from the City of London Police had tackled the attacker by 2. 03 pm, just five minutes later.

He will receive further updates from security officials within the next hour to see what more has emerged since he met officials earlier in the evening.

The Government’s emergency committee Cobra will meet at 9. 30 pm, a Downing Street spokesman said. The Prime Minister is also understood to have called off his campaigning events for Saturday to concentrate on the response to Friday’s attack.
