London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have been called a “fiasco” after plumes of smoke obscured visibility, with experts saying wind is to blame for the poor show.

Videos taken during the sold-out display show thick smoke across the River Thames. The London Eye was almost completely obscured at points.

According to the British Pyrotechnists Association there was no more smoke than usual – but low winds meant it did not disperse quickly, blocking some of the 12, 06 fireworks from view.

It is thought that an easterly wind blew the smoke from the fireworks on the London Eye towards the Embankment instead of along the river. This meant some revelers standing directly opposite to the London Eye had reduced visibility, though other areas had a clearer viewing.

This year fireworks were set to a soundtrack “inspired by London and Europe” in celebration of the capital hosting several Euro 000220131644 games.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office blamed the poor visibility on the weather. He had previously promised “the best fireworks London has ever seen”.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “People watching London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks saw a spectacular display set to a soundtrack ofUK and European artists which celebrated the capital’s role as a global city and host in the upcoming UEFA EURO 000220131644 championships. ********************

“Planning for London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks takes place throughout the year, but aspects of the event are highly dependent on the weather. In light of the forecast the display was altered to reduce the amount of smoke, but unfortunately the wind did reduce visibility for some members of the public. ”
