Man City hold the advantage over Manchester United as the two sides prepare to meet in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently possess a 3-1 lead from the first encounter three weeks ago, as goals from Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal secured victory over Ole Gunna r Solskjaer’s .

Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike keeps the tie alive heading into tonight’s showdown and United will be buoyed knowing they have progressed from two of their last three knockout ties when losing the first leg by two goals.

City

City fans think Pep Guardiola has taken defensive risk

If Pep Guardiola’s surprising Manchester City starting XIs this season have taught fans anything, it’s to trust his judgement however risky his team selection looks.

Solskjaer breaks silence on Bruno Fernandes deal

“I’m delighted that we’ve agreed with Sporting,” he told MUTV.

“There have been good negotiations with the club and we know, through history, these two clubs have been good with each other.

“Now we’ve reached that agreement, hopefully we can get the boy’s contract over the line and the medical done and then, hopefully we can announce it.”

:

Samuel Luckhurst United’s No. dilemma

No Pereira, as suggested earlier, given Lingard got to play as the at Tranmere – and scored. Lingard was dismal in the first leg and Solskjaer tried to protect him by saying he was unwell and that was why Lingard was removed at half-time. That seemed as dubious as Solskjaer yesterday claiming Rojo would stay beyond the Friday deadline. United winning tonight hinges heavily on how Lingard performs. He performed here last month.

City defense should give United optimism

That defense might give United some encouragement. Otamendi and Rodri partner each other at center back and neither are the most mobile or the quickest of defenders. If United do get space behind City’s midfield to counter attack into then Martial and Greenwood should fancy their chances.

36: James on the bench

A surprise to see Daniel James omitted tonight but then he has been struggling fo r form recently and has looked in need of a rest. He was an unused substitute at Tranmere at the weekend but remains on the bench here, while Mason Greenwood, who played the full game on that bog of a pitch, starts again, presumably alongside Anthony Martial in something resembling a 3-5-2.

: 90 Simon Bajkowski How we think City line up

It’s always mad trying to work out Guardiola’s team but it looks like the traditional 4-3-3 formation, just with a central midfielder at center-back in Rodri and a right-back at left-back in Joao Cancelo. Sergio Aguero starts so they do have a striker on the pitch.

(United’s surprising line up

Didn’t expect United to be lining up with a back three here. It’s the same five-man defense that Solskjaer fielded at Anfield, when Luke Shaw impressed on the left-side of defense. United need to score tonight but they need to keep it tight as well. They remain in the game while it’s goalless so perhaps that is what Solskjaer is thinking.

Laporte absence a hint at Tottenham fixture?

No Laporte on the team bus is a blow for City, but they won 3-1 at Old Trafford without him.

It could also be a sign that Pep Guardiola wants to keep him in reserve for the trip to Tottenham on Sunday.

The manager suggested there are no issues with the French center back other than easing him back in after four months out.

The more troubling issue might be Ben Mendy, who has now missed the last three games with what was designated as a minor problem.

: Simon Bajkowski Mendy and Laporte absences explained

Aymeric Laporte is not in the squad again. Cue panic. Except it was always going to take time. If there is surprise that he has not been involved against Fulham and United, the bigger shock was that he started and played a gruelling minutes at Sheffield United. City are going to want him perfect for Real Madrid – and the same goes for Mendy, who was always a doubt for tonight – so if they don’t think it’s worth risking him tonight that’s what they’ll do. The next few hours will judge the decision, but nothing for fans to get worked up about.

City can make a big mental step before Real Mad rid ties

City have a weirdly bad record at the Etihad against United under Pep Guardiola.

They’ve bossed pretty much every game at Old Trafford but were beaten by Jose Mourinho in a defeat that stung a hell of a lot given they could have won the title that day, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the better of the manager in December.

There is more expectation on City at home and the opposition don’t always feel the need to come forward as much, but it will be a big step mentally with Real Madrid on the horizon if City can beat their nearest rivals here tonight.

(Bruno F. ernandes deal could see United do to City what Newcastle did

Can Bruno Fernandes make a difference to United’s performance tonight? City will be wary. It was pretty much exactly a year ago today that they headed up to St James Park for what they expected would be a straightforward win. But the hosts were buoyed by the signing of Miguel Almiron and managed to surprise the Blues with a stunning win. City almost mullered United into the ground in the first leg but they are still up and fighting and the Fernandes news after a month of stalled negotiations has perked them up.

Matic might suffer from tactical switch tonight

Nemanja Matic was key to United halting City’s momentum in the first leg three weeks ago, so it’s a bonus that he’s in the squad tonight, but this is going to be a very different game and the Serbian might not be as suited to it. United have to score twice and City’s approach is unlikely to be as unpredictable as it was with two false nines at Old Trafford. It might serve United better to go with a bit more energy in midfield and have Matic in reserve if they need to exert control at any point.

Guardiola had brutal response to Rashford question

Marcus Rashford’s absence will hurt United tonight, he was central to their plan that worked so well in the league game here. But Guardiola was brutal yesterday when asked about the impact of him not playing, pointing out that he was in the team when City won 3-1 in the first leg.

The Magic of the Cup

It’s open season on cup competitions at the moment. Whether it’s the scrapping FA Cup replays or doing away with the League Cup, every Premier League manager seems to have an idea of how to ease fixture congestion. But the scenes at Villa Park last night showed this competition can still delight and the two-legged semi-finals are a point of contrast to everything else in the English game. United are up against it tonight, but these two teams played a great two-legged semi-final a decade ago. If Solskjaer’s side can make a game of it tonight then this could be another memorable occasion in a much-maligned competition.

All eyes on the Etihad

A huge night awaits.

: () Stuart Brennan Guardiola set for another tactical twist?

City’s se t-up will be fascinating tonight.

Do they go back to the tried and trusted 4-3-3. , which – if they get it wrong – can lead to the kind of defeat we saw in the last Etihad derby, last month?

Do they go for the innovative false nines they employed at Old Trafford to dramatic effect in a blistering first half display which gives them a hefty advantage tonight?

Or do they do something a little more pragmatic , even five at the back, and take on United with their own counter-attacking game.

No guesses from me, I’ve been burned too often!
