(Manchester United) ***************** (versus) ****************** (Liverpool) is one of the great rivalries of thePremier Leaguebut Barnes has warnedOle Gunnar Solskjaerabout the dangers of trying to get his side to put on an exciting attacking display in front of their own fans.

United currently sit 12 th in the table and have only taken nine points for eight matches, while Liverpool have made a fantastic start to the season.

The teams are currently separated by 15 points and Jurgen Klopp has not only seen his side take maximum points, but Liverpool have also conceded the fewest amount of goals, six, of any team in the division.

And Barnes thinks Solskjaer should change his side’s style of play for the match on Sunday, despite the pressure on the Norwegian to play open attacking football.

If Manchester United now under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are going back to trying to play an exciting, open game , I think Liverpool will destroy them

John Barnes

“If Manchester United now under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are going back to trying to play an exciting, open game, I think Liverpool will destroy them, ”Barnes told theEvening Standard.

“If you go toe-to-toe with Liverpool and try and play an open g ame … even Manchester City adapt their game to play against Liverpool!

“If Manchester United come and say, ‘We’re the home team, let’s play an open game ‘, I think Liverpool will beat them comfortably. ”

Barnes even suggested Solskjaer might want to take a page out of his predecessor’s playbook and try and catch Liverpool on the break.

Jurgen Klopp

“A counterattacking team is what Jose Mourinho would have done – defend deep, allow them to have the ball,” the former England and Liverpool midfielder added.

“That is not what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done, it’s not what he has c ome to Manchester United to do, which is what Jose Mourinho was criticized for.

“So it’s just a question as to whether Ole decides to be a bit more cautious, to defend more, and try and catch them on the counter, which is an away team performance. ”

United might have only won one out of their last five Premier League games but Klopp isn’t underestimating the Red Devils.

“You need momentum in a game and a season and at the moment United don’t have it, ”Klopp said.

“We respect them as the best Man Utd we could face and not the Man Utd people are speaking of during the week. ”

As for Solskjaer, he believes playing Liverpool is a great opportunity for his players.

“We’ve come a long way on what you call the culture, environment that we’re working in, it’s positive,” Solskjaer said.

“The staff and players know when it’s Liverpool coming up it’s a game that’s gonna be watched by so many and when you sign for Manchester United this is the first one you look forward to against one of the main rivals and it’s a chance for them to, as I did, a couple of times, to get in the history books as I did. ”
