Manchester United survived an almighty fright to overcome League One Rochdale on penalties.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side endured a humbling night in the EFL Cup as 16 – year-old Luke Matheson silencedOld Traffordwith his second half goal.

Mason Greenwood looked to have saved United’s blushes with his 68 th minute strike – but Matheson grabbed a deserved equaliser to send the game into a shoot-out.

And Rochdale were also left ruing Callum Camps ’failure to find the back of the net from point blank range when the game was still goal-less.

In the end, it took penalties to seal victory for Solskjaer, with United converting all five of their spot kicks, while Sergio Romero denied Jimmy Keohane.

It was far from convincing from the home side, whose early season struggles go on.

Even with the returning Paul Pogba from ankle injury and Greenwood from tonsillitis, they couldn’t put Rochdale away.

While Solskjaer could point to a host of chances created by his side – their wastefulness in front goal underlined their problems this term.

It’s a measure of United’s struggles that Rochdale turned up at Old Trafford with no fear.

Only a last ditch challenge from Axel Tuanzebe denied Camps from going through one-on-one with Romero for the first real chance of the match after Fred was dispossessed in a dangerous area.

Still, United should have gone in at the break ahead.

Jesse Lingard headed straight at Robert Sanchez from close range after a swift break.

Pogba was guilty of wasting an even better chance when arriving unchallenged in the six-yard box to meet Greenwood’s perfectly-measured cross.

With the goal to aim at, he headed over.

Greenwood saw another effort saved by Sanchez, while Lingard’s close-range header drifted over the bar just before the break.

Shortly after the restart it was Rochdale cursing their luck.

Rathbone dribbled his way through the box to the touchline, before cutting back for Camps.

The striker poked his effort goal-wards from virtually under the bar, but was denied by Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the line.

Greenwood punished them when opening the scoring on 68 minutes.

Just as he had done against Astana a week earlier, the teenager came to Solskjaer’s rescue with a goal of his own making – shuffling past Rhys Norrington-Davies and blasting past Sanchez.

Old Trafford rose in appreciation of their latest hero – but just as thoughts turned to the fourth round, Rochdale stunned the home crowd.

With 76 minutes on the clock Rathbone chased after a lost cause on the left.

His looping cross fell to the far post where Matheson was waiting to catch it on the half volley to steer it into the back of the net.

As the game entered six minutes of added time, United still had their chances to seal it – Daniel James firing over from close range.

It was James who would eventually settle things – converting the winning spot kick to the relief of all around Old Trafford.
