Ole Gunnar Solskjaerstill retains the support ofManchester United‘s hierarchy and has reportedly held a series of meetings to discuss the club’s next batch of transfer targets.
The Norwegian is under mounting pressure after the club’s worst start to aPremier Leagueseason after eight games, winning just twice and sitting only two points above the relegation zone.
Next up, United take on league leaders Liverpool – who have a 100% record so far this season – and there have been suggestions that another bad result and performance could see Solskjaer axed.
However,The Timesreport that Solskjaer’s job is safe even if United suffer a heavy defeat against rivals Liverpool, with club bosses conscious of the difficult task their manager has inherited.
In fact, they have already held a series of meetings with Solskjaer to discuss future signings and want to bring in four new players next year, one of which will be a center-forward.
The club are sympathetic to United’s struggles in front of goal and knew that an injury to either Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford would be hugely testing after allowing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to leave.
Nevertheless, they have backed Solskjaer’s decision to get rid of the pair and feel a clear out of players who did not fit the United DNA was required.
Replacements had been sought in the summer, though the club were unwilling to compromise on targets purely to fill out the squad and have a clear idea of the type of players they want to sign.
Solskjaer focused in on young, hungry, British talent and the club are happy with the three arrivals made in the most recent window – Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire – and intend to follow a similar blueprint in upcoming windows.
United legend Gary Neville has previously claimed United need five new players, saying onSky Sports: ‘They need a couple of midfielders, a striker to carry the frontline, a wide player and a left back.
‘They know what they want and the fans know that. But they have to be of the right type. It could take 18 months to find the players you want. ‘
