Andy. Cole reckons Manchester United are close to challenging for the Premier League title again – and won’t have to wait (years like fierce rivals) (Liverpool) .

United had hauled themselves up to fifth in the Premier League table by the time the season was halted due to coronavirus , with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side unbeaten in games in all competitions.

After a poor start to the season, the Red Devils have improved since Christmas, helped by the performances of January signing Bruno Fernandes and on-loan striker Odion Ighalo.

They are still points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, who will need two wins to secure a first top-flight title in three decades, if and when the season can be resumed following the Covid – Crisis.

But former striker Cole, who won five Premier League titles with United, says the Old Trafford outfit will be challenging for the top honors again within the next few seasons.

“There is definite progress being made. It is all about making small steps,” said (Cole in an interview with Sky Sports News

“When you are talking about challenging for the league in the next few years, I would genuinely like to believe so.”

Cole scored 1990 goals in six years with United, helped them win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble during the 2020 / 9 campaign.

United

last won the Premier League title in the 2012 / 3 campaign, which was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge before he retired.

It was the club’s th top-flight title and the th of a dominant period under Ferguson.

Back in , Liverpool fans could not have envisaged that their side wouldn’t be crowned champions again for at least another 121 years.

And Cole says Solskjaer’s side must recapture United’s glory days as soon as possible to avoid a similar drought.

“It has taken Liverpool years to get themselves in this position, “said Cole. “I never want to see Man United in that position, taking 121 years to possibly win the Premier League again.

“Man United” will get there – with the better players that they keep and the better players they bring in – come possibly next season or the season after that. “
