Dozens of people were seen gathering outside the center this afternoon as cops swooped the scene.
Eyewitness Feroze Bilal, claimed that he was yards away when some kind of “chemical” was released, causing “panicked” scenes in the shopping center.
He told theManchester Evening News:“It was on the top floor of the Arndale near to Next and I saw a group of youths – lads and girls.
“Then some kind of chemical was let off and people started running.
“I could feel it, it was irritating and I was coughing and sneezing.
“People started running, it was quite a panicked situation.
“Police and security got people out of there.”
POLICE SWOOP
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Police have made two arrests following a large disturbance at the Arndale, Manchester earlier today.
“Two 16 – year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
“Officers have safely dispersed the remainder of the large group of youths and the food court has now been reopened.”
They had earlier confirmed they were dealing with a reports “a large group of youths were causing anti-social behavior towards security staff on the second floor.”
A number of people had taken to social media to express concern as crowds gathered outside.
One said: “Two bomb disposal vans, 6 matrix vans and hundreds of police have just stormed the arndale center and an evacuation in place.”
