The days whenManchester Unitedhad one of the most feared midfields in the Premier League are an increasingly distant memory for Old Trafford regulars.

The current United midfield has more holes than a sieve. Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera have both departed without being replaced and when the Belgian beanpole Fellaini is so clearly being missed then you soon realize this is a midfield in serious need of investment.

WhilePaul Pogbais United’s one true world class performer and Scott McTominay continues to shine in difficult circumstances, the other options available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are struggling for an impact. Nemanja Matic and Fred continue to disappoint, while neither Juan Mata or Jesse Lingard have made the more advanced role their own.

Ideally United need two or three central midfielders over the next few transfer windows, but with so many holes to be plugged they could look for a versatile all-rounder to add some much needed depth in the center of the pitch.

In that regard United could do worse than try and tempt Aston Villa into parting with John McGinn. WhenUnited were linkedwith the Scot in the summer it caused plenty of amusement on social media, much as the links to Sean Longstaff did, but McGinn has proven himself to be a Premier League performer with the Villains in his first eight games at this level.

McGinn has done a bit of everything for Villa’s midfield so far. The 24 – year-old is often used as a shuttler in Dean Smith’s midfield, with Douglas Luiz playing the most defensive role and Jack Grealish the most offensive, but McGinn’s numbers suggest he would be equally adept in covering for either of his teammates.

Only four midfielders have made more tackles than McGinn this season, who has won 72 per cent of his defensive duels. He is level with James Maddison at the top of the list for shots from midfield and fourth for dribbles from the center of the pitch. He is rapidly emerging as a midfielder with several strings to his bow.

The former St Mirren and Hibernian midfielder might not be the glamor name that United fans would desire. He’s not going to sprinkle some extra stardust into this side, but he could contribute to a midfield that is considerably undermanned for United at the moment.

Solskjaerneeds extra options in that area of the pitch and McGinn could provide that. He could prove expensive, as many domestic players are, but this is a market United are keen to focus on and Villa’s No.7 could prove to be two players in one given his midfield versatility.

It’s been reported that Sir Alex Ferguson is a fan of the diminutive Scot, but given his performances so far this season the queue of suitors for McGinn could well increase.
