Manchester United Women vs Man City RECAP as Zelem and Sigsworth score and Walsh sent off – Manchester Evening News, Manchestereveningnews.co.uk


Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-0 in the Continental Cup to grab the bragging rights in the secondManchester derbyof the new season .

Nick Cushing’s side edged the league derby last month thanks to a Caroline Weir wonderstrike but it wasCasey Stoney’sside who were deserved winners on a sunny afternoon at Leigh Sports Village.

Citydominated the early possession but it wasUnitedwho took the lead thanks to a brilliantly struck free kick from captain Katie Zelem. Caroline Weir went closest for the visitors in the first half but it was United who went in ahead at the break.

And Jess Sigsworth doubled their lead in the second half as she finished a Kirsty Hanson cross. Things went from bad to worse for City when Walsh was shown a straight red for a rash challenge on Hanson. The result meant United picked up their first points in the Conti Cup and City lose their first game of the season.

It’s been a half which was cagey and scrappy at times and it’s United that go in ahead at the break thanks to a perfectly struck free kick by captain Zelem in the 7th minute.

City’s best chance fell to Weir six yards out but she couldn’t get her shot off and Roebuck was forced into action to save from Hanson who tried her luck with an effort an 25 yards out.

City have dominated the possession but United have dealt with their threat while Cushing’s side have struggled at times to click into gear.

City on the break with Ross playing it to Beckie down the right but her cross sails into the stand behind.

Free kick to United on the left hand side of the area. Zelem whips it in and it’s cleared by City. But they just can’t break as Beckie fails to get to the ball.

Weir with some nifty footwork inside the area but just couldn’t get her shot off and Beckie couldn’t get her effort from they byline count either. City dominating now.

Free kick to City on the far left hand side by the touchline. Swung in and doesn’t beat the first person in the box. Falls to Houghton and out to Beckie who gets the ball back into the area.

City dominating now.

Beckie with a lovely ball in from the right and Weir just couldn’t get it under control from six yards out. City’s best chance of the half.

Since the goal it’s been a little bit scrappy with neither side really clicking into their usual flow . Neither keeper has been tested. Zelem’s free kick the difference.

Scott with a nice ball in from the right hand side towards the near post but United clear. City still have possession. Good work from Bonner on the byline who gets another ball into the area but it’s cleared away by United.

United getting an upperhand on the game at the moment but City have the quality to get back into this game.
