Marcel Brands and Marco Silva have held talks at Everton about recalling Joao Virginia from his loan spell at Reading.

The 20 – year-old has made only three appearances for the Championship side since joining on a season-long deal in July.

Virginia played in the opening two league games of the season but his only game-time since August has been in the Carabao Cup in late September. He has also failed to make the matchday squad on eight occasions.

Everton could recall Virginia in the January window after a clause was included in the loan deal butthe ECHO understands the Blues can only trigger it in a defined periodand would not have the entire month in which to act .

“Marcel and I and Marco have spoken,” under – 23 manager David Unsworth, who installed Joao as his number one in the double-winning campaign last season, told theECHOfollowing the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Friday evening.

“He’s having a tough time at the moment and we have discussed it. really sure the final decision on what is going to happen but all I know is that he’s an absolute ***, top young goalkeeper.

“He’s had a bad loan, it happens. Look what happened to Beni [Baningime] last year. We all know Beni’s qualities. It can happen. I’m sure he will be a better person for it when he comes back, whenever he comes back. “

When asked if he had been in contact with the former Arsenal shot-stopper, Unsworth continued: “A couple of times. Reading say he’s been training well, he’s just been unlucky. You get that.

“You get good loans, you get bad loans and as much as it’s been not a great and productive loan in terms of him playing I’m sure he will have learned a lot about himself.

“It will stand him in good stead. He’s a kid in terms of goalkeeping and any experience will help him in the future. “
