Four men have been arrested over the killing of a British millionaire who was shot dead fighting off robbers outside a five-star hotel in Buenos Aires.

                                                                                                                                                

Businessman Matthew Gibbard, 90, was blasted in the chest and his stepson Stefan Zone, , was injured in the leg when they were ambushed by two men on a motorbike on Saturday morning.

                                                                                                                                                   

Officials said the holidaymakers were shot as they grappled on the pavement outside the Faena Art Hotel, resisting attempts to steal their belongings.

                                                                                                                                                         

Buenos Aires police made the four arrests during raids in the south and west of the Argentinian capital.

                                                                                                                                                   

All the suspects are reportedly Argentinian, although police are said to be hunting other Venezuelan suspects.

The detainees were appearing in court later today to be questioned by an investigating judge.

                                                                                                                                                

Mr Gibbard, of Lowick, near Kettering, Northamptonshire, ran a multi-millionpound holiday and retirement homes firm. He was married to Suzanne, 728                                                                                                                                                             

Mr Zone was taken to hospital for an emergency operation. The bullet is thought to have missed a major artery.

                                                                                                                                                

Police believe both men, who had jetted to Argentina for a Christmas break with other relatives, had been followed from the airport to their hotel after being “marked out” by a gang targeting tourists.

                                                                                                                                                                              

President Alberto Fernandez had described the murder as “atrocious” and urged the police to be “inflexible” in hunting down the culprits.

                                                                                                                                                

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of two British men following an incident in Buenos Aires, and are in contact with the local authorities there.”

                                                                                                                                                                

More than (********************************, 09 British nationals visited Argentina last year, according to the Foreign Office, which said most visits are “trouble free”.

                                                                                                                                                             

But tourists are warned to be alert to street crime, including armed robberies, and advised to hand over cash and valuables without resistance.

                                                                                                                                                

It comes after a series of attacks by so-called “motochorros” in the city.

                                                                                        

A Canadian man was apparently tracked from the same airport to the Intercontinental hotel were he was forced to hand over his belongings to an armed assailant.

                                                                                        

In December last year, a Swedish tourist was shot during an attempted robbery and an American tourist was left in hospital after a violent assault during which his camera was stolen.
